Staff report
A China Grove man died Sunday evening when the Harley-Davidson he was riding collided with a car in the Atwell community.
His wife was also injured in the accident.
Another biker remains in critical condition in a Charlotte hospital from a Friday evening accident.
The Sunday accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of N.C. 152 and Corriher Grange Road.
Barry Stewart, 44, of 185 Mary Esther Lane, China Grove, died at the scene, according to a Trooper Heon with the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Steward’s passenger, wife Cindy Stewart, was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
According to the trooper, Stewart was driving his motorcycle west on N.C. 152 when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction turned into his path to turn onto Corriher Grange Road.
The car was driven by Robert Creswell, 51, of Mooresville.
Heon said he had not yet had a chance to interview Creswell, who was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Frank Greene, information officer with the Atwell Volunteer Fire Department, said the motorcycle collided with a Jeep Liberty.
Greene said both the Stewart and his wife were thrown off.
“It was a bad wreck,” Greene said, adding that the intersection of Corriher Grange and N.C. 152 is a relatively safe intersection. “It’s a rare occurrence that we have an accident there.”
Atwell got assistance from Enochville Fire & Rescue and South Iredell Fire Department to re-route traffic onto Unity Church Road and Deal Road. West Rowan assisted with the helicopter landing zone.
It was the second serious weekend accident involving a motorcycle in the Atwell area.
Friday evening, a couple riding a Harley-Davidson on Shinn Farm Road were thrown off when their bike hit a car turning into driveway.
Lindsey Radford, 54, of Shinnville Road, remains in Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition with severe head injuries.
His wife, Judy, was released from CMC Saturday.
