Atwell firefighters honoredThe Atwell Volunteer Fire Department recently honored several firefighters during the annual awards dinner.
Chief Mike McLaughlin presented the awards and recognized the efforts of firefighters and medical responders.
The awards and recipients:
– Officer of the year ó Steve Garver;
– Firefighter of the year ó Matt Beaver;
– Medical responder of the year ó Chris Coughenour;
– Rookie firefighter of the year ó Brian Alley;
– Junior firefighter of the yearó Rachel Orphanoudakis.
In addition to department awards, Frank Green and Martin Whitson were given plaques commemorating their 20-plus years of service to the department. The department also honored Matt Beaver, Ryan Yost and Jimmy Holcombe, who each have served 10-plus years.
The department responded to more than 500 fire and medical calls during 2008.
