Area sports briefs: Catawba, Livingstone get wins

From staff reportsRob Fields had 19 points and four assists as Catawba’s men’s basketball team won 77-72 at Nova Southeastern on Saturday.
Catawba had to rally late. It trailed by four points with 3:43 remaining.
With 24 seconds left and the Indians (4-2) leading by one point, Fields stepped to the foul line and made two clutch free throws.
After Fields rebounded a miss by Nova, Justin Huntley hit two free throws for the final margin.
Antonio Houston scored 16 points, Donald Rutherford had 12, and Dominick Reid contributed 11 for the Indians. Rutherford led Catawba rebounders with eight. Houston hit four 3-pointers.
Catawba held Nova (1-3) to 38-percent shooting. Ross Allsop scored 17 for Nova.

n Livingstone men
Senior guard Aaron Caruthers scored 27 points to lead Livingstone’s men’s basketball team to a 72-62 win at CIAA foe Bowie State on Saturday.
Caruthers was 12-for-14 from the foul line and kept the Blue Bears in the game when their big men experienced first-half foul trouble.
Jarred Stockton had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Bears.
Livingstone (3-2) shot 40.7 percent from the floor and won its third straight league game.
Bowie State (2-2) fell to 2-1 in the CIAA.
Livingstone is on the road at Lincoln on Monday.

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost at Bowie State 64-53 on Saturday.
A 10-0 run early in the second half proved decisive for the Bulldogs.
Montiya Harrison had 14 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to lead the Blue Bears. Kayler McBride scored 13 points.
Livingstone (2-4, 0-3 CIAA) shot 35.8 percent from the field. Bowie is 2-3, 2-1.
n All-CPC football
Davie junior linebacker Jared Barber has been named CPC Defensive Player of the Year for football.
Davie defensive lineman Christian Peebles, safety Zach Long, offensive tackle Zach Dunn, receiver Joe Watson and quarterback Jacob Barber were also named to the All-CPC squad.
n Youth cross countryMarianne Abdalah finished seventh in the 10-under girls division in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships South Regional held at Charlotte’s McAlpine Greenway on Saturday.
Abdalah ran 13:09 on the 3K (1.86 miles) course. She received a gold medal for her top-10 finish and was named to the all-region team. She topped her time in last year’s race by 30 seconds.
n Rene´ Abdalah, Marianne’s 8-year-old brother, competed in the 10-under boys division and finished 19th. He ran a personal best time of 13:52 in his debut in the race and received a silver medal for a top-20 finish. He made the all-region team.
n Both Abdalahs are headed to Orlando, Fla., for the AAU Cross Country Nationals. Both finished second in their age divisions at a qualifier held at Concord’s Liske Park.
