Catawba placed five players on the All-SAC teams for women’s soccer.
Earning first-team honors were midfielder Maria Borland and defender Alexa Baird. Second-team honors went to forward Stephanie Borland, midfielder Tasha Wilhelm and midfielder Katie Gair.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Elizabeth Hawes is the SAC Player of the Year.n Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost at UNC Greensboro 79-55 on Saturday in an exhibition game.
Catawba was led by junior transfer Milica Ivanovic, who scored 20 points, all in the second half.
Freshman Elizabeth Merritt had a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman Taylor May (South Rowan) had two points and three rebounds in nine minutes of action.
n Catawba’s men finished 16th while the women were 17th in the Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships held at the Wingate on Saturday.
Freshman Christian Crifasi had the top finish for the Catawba men. He ran 33:44 on a 10K course, the second-fastest 10K in school history.
Maleah Cole led the Catawba women. She finished 17th.
n Carson-Newman topped Catawba’s volleyball team 3-1 on Saturday at Goodman Gym. Shay Meeks had 20 kills for the Indians (16-10, 9-7 SAC).
Catawba is the No. 4 seed for the SAC tournament and plays No. 5 seed Tusculum, the tournament host, on Friday in Greeneville, Tenn.
n Catawba women’s swim team won 16 of 17 events against Rollins and 11 of 17 vs. Wingate in a tri-meet recently held in Charlotte.
Katie Huff (North Stanly) won the 100 breast in a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:06.95, a tenth of second off her school record. Huff won the 50 free and set a school-record and swam a second NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.25.
n D-II football
Carson-Newman received a bye for the first round of the D-II playoffs and is the No. 2 seed in Super Region Two. The Eagles are the only SAC team in the field.
On Nov. 21, Carson-Newman (9-2) will play host to the winner of this Saturday’s matchup between No. 6 West Alabama (7-4) and No. 3 Albany State (8-2) .
On the opposite side of the Super Region Two bracket, Gulf South Conference champion North Alabama (10-1) has a bye and is the No. 1 seed. The top-ranked Lions will play host to the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 5 UNC Pembroke (9-1) and No. 4 Arkansas Tech (8-2).
n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team recently defeated High Point’s Immaculate Heart of Mary 43-32.
Banks Fisher led the Dolphins with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Edwards had 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Max Fisher scored six points. Christian Hester and Bobby Cardelle were defensive standouts.
n The Sacred Heart Tip Off Tournament, involving 16 girls and boys teams, is set for Nov. 12-14.
n Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s men’s team closed the cross country season by finishing 17th at the regional on Saturday. Matt Tyndall ran 36:30 on a 10K course and was 77th.
n Rowan wrestling
The Rowan County Youth Wrestling League will hold late registrations for boys in grades K-6 this Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. in the wrestling room at Hall Gym.
