Published 12:00 am Friday, October 30, 2009
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Pfafftown Ronald Reagan is 1-8 and 0-3 in its first try in the CPC; Davie 3-6, 0-3 CPC
Series: First meeting
Last week: Davie lost another close one, falling to Mount Tabor 14-11; Reagan was dumped 28-11 by still unbeaten West Forsyth
Next week: Reagan is at R.J. Reynolds; Davie is at big rival North Davidson
Davie at home: 1-3 (War Eagles beat Thomasville)
Game notes: Davie has to be the best 3-6 team in the state, although that’s little consolation to Doug Illing’s frustrated War Eagles.
Davie is playing well defensively, limiting high-powered West Forsyth and Mount Tabor offenses the past two weeks. But the War Eagles haven’t scored frequently enough ó 41 points in three CPC games ó and they’ve missed QB Jacob Barber, who was unavailable in three tight losses. Just about every game has come down to one play, but Davie’s opponent has made it. The War Eagles have lost three times by a field goal. Another loss went to overtime. It’s possible the War Eagles, who enjoyed one moderate breather at Providence Day on Sept. 11, have played the state’s most challenging schedule ó at least the most challenging in the western half.
Davie has edged Salisbury (6-3) and Thomasville (5-4), both of whom are arguably top-10 teams in 2A.
Davie has lost to Alexander Central (9-0), Greensboro Page (8-1), West Rowan (10-0), R.J. Reynolds (9-0), West Forsyth (9-0) and Mount Tabor (6-3). According to the Ken Massey Ratings, Davie has lost to four of the state’s top 13 teams.
Davie absolutely has to win this week and probably will do so with ease. Reagan’s only victory came at the expense of the struggling Atkins Camels (1-8). ó Mike London
