Area sports briefs: Catawba picked No. 1

Catawba was picked to win the SAC men’s basketball championship in voting by league coaches that was announced on Wednesday.
Catawba, which has won back-to-back SAC tournaments, received six of nine first-place votes and accumulated 77 points. Catawba’s Antonio Houston and Rob Fields are preseason All-SAC first-team picks.
– Catawba’s women were picked sixth in the SAC voting. Catawba’s Dana Hicks (11.1 ppg) was named to the preseason All-SAC second team. L-R was picked first. Mars Hill’s Brittini Young (16.6 ppg), who played at East Rowan, is also a second-team choice. See Scoreboard.
– Middle school sports
The Knox-North Rowan seventh-grade football game has been rescheduled for today at 4 at Knox.
– Pfeiffer athletics
Alex Landin scored three goals for Pfeiffer in a 5-4 men’s soccer loss to Limestone on Wednesday.
