Area sports briefs: Scraggs wins SPC title

A.L. Brown’s Larry Scaggs finished first in the SPC boys cross country championship meet with a time of 16:48.
The Wonders placed fourth as a team. Concord took the title.
n Prep volleyball
Top-seeded West Iredell, which will face Carson for the NPC tournament title, reached the final by sweeping Statesville on Tuesday.
– Prep tennis
Statesville, which tied East Rowan for first place in the NPC and lost a tiebreaker match with the Mustangs, fell 5-4 against Concord in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
n Central Davidson, the CCC’s second-place team, lost 7-2 to North Stanly in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
– College golf
Catawba’s men’s golf team placed fourth among 13 squads at the LMU Invitational in Harrogate, Tenn.
Lincoln Memorial won the event in a playoff with North Greenville, and Catawba shot a 585.
Senior Jonathan Clapp led Catawba with a third-place finish. After opening with a 72, he had a 3-under 69 to equal his career low. Tusculum’s David Talley edged LMU’s Eric Kennedy in a playoff for medalist honors.
Kyle Kegerreis (10th, 72-72ó144), Brad Cline (26th, 74-76ó150), Jason Rossetti (26th, 78-72ó150) and Eric Schmehl (52nd, 80-78ó158) also represented Catawba.
n Catawba’s women’s golf team finished fifth out of nine teams at the Saint Leo Invitational in Saint Leo, Fla.
Catawba shot a 677, and Kelsey Babos (77-80ó157) earned a sixth-place finish.
The other totals belonged to Elizabeth Smith (15th, 85-84ó169), Stephanie Demetrelis (26th, 90-85ó175), Eileen Purpur (29th, 92-84ó176) and Kelly Berry (39th, 94-88ó182).
– Middle school football
China Grove’s seventh-grade football team won a 44-42 thriller with West Rowan.
Statistical information from both sides will appear in Thursday’s edition of the Post.
– Middle school softball
Fifth-seeded West Rowan’s middle school softball team won 13-2 against fourth-seeded China Grove in the first round of the Mid-South Conference tournament held at Corriher Lipe.
West pitcher Hunter Gibbons gave up two hits and struck out eight batters. Leading West’s 14-hit attack were Gibbons, Michaela White and Marissa Yow (three apiece). Catherine Whitley and Kristen South had two hits. n Middle school tennis
Erwin’s conference champion tennis team completed a 13-0 season with a 6-3 victory against Knox.

– Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart’s tennis team beat Assembly Christian of Winston Salem 9-0.
Singles winners for the Dolphins (5-3) were Jordan DeJaco, Meg Hedgepeth, Jessica Roy, Erin Ansbro, Lauren Roy and Caroline Chilton.
Doubles winners were DeJaco-Hedgepeth, Jessica Roy-Ansbro and Lauren Roy-Erin Roy.
Hedgepeth, Ansbro and Chilton will compete this weekend in USTA play in Greensboro.
– Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s soccer team shut out Hickory Christian 3-0 to cap the regular season. Jon Mark Petty had a strong game in goal for the Jaguars (11-1). They finished in first place for the first time. The CCISAA tournament starts Thursday.
* Salisbury Academy beat Trinity Episcopal 9-0 to finish the girls tennis season Monday.
Madeline Hoskins, Anna Flynn, Alexandra Drye, Mackenzie Beaver, Ann Rollins Johnson, Olivia Smith, Drew Pethel, Emily Capito and Grace Steinman won for the Jaguars (9-0).
SA won 79 of 81 matches and went undefeated for the third time.
– GARS
Fifty-four golfers played at Lexington County Club in the latest GARS outing Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was O.J. Chandler with a net of 62.52.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Gene Poplin with a net of 65.61.
Low ‘C’ player was Don Julian. He had a net of 65.54.
Jim Brown won ‘D’ Flight with a net of 68.84.
