Performing with ease Instructor Missy Barnes will offer an introductory class in Alexander Technique focusing on principles of movement, body mapping, and physical awareness in order to enhance performance skills, especially for musicians.
The Alexander Technique re-educates the body into moving more easily, allowing us to relearn the natural grace and poise with which we were born. AT is a simple and practical approach by which people learn how to reduce unnecessary tension while engaging in normal activities. AT teachers observe students in everyday activities and use a combination of verbal instruction, demonstration, and light guiding touch to help them regain freedom of motion.
People generally seek the benefits of the technique in response to general tension and stress challenges (tight neck and shoulders, nervousness in social situations) or specific pain issues (back problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee problems). The technique is also studied by performers (musicians, actors, dancers) and athletes to enhance performance skills.
The class will be Monday, Oct. 19 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at The Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St.
There will be no strenuous activities involved in the class but attendees who play music instruments will be invited to bring their instruments to work with. There is a piano on site for pianists to use. Dress for comfort, particularly footwear.
Class fee is $5.

Rock-a-Buy for Ty
CHARLOTTE ó Band members Caleb Davis, Justin Morehead and Kroy Presley of the Caleb.Davis.Band are presenting a benefit concert 8 p.m., Oct. 30 for Ty Gardner, an unborn child suffering from a tumor in his chest which prevents his lungs from developing. Ty’s condition is known as Congenital Cystic Adenomatoid Malformation (CCAM) and Bronchopulmonary Sequestration (BPS).
Ty will undergo a surgery to remove the tumor at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His parents, Craig and Rayna Gardner are from Salisbury, but Rayna has been living in Philadelphia since the diagnosis in mid-July because she must have continuous monitoring with ultrasounds every two days to follow the growth of the tumor and a potential fetal surgery.
When the Caleb.Davis.Band was asked to perform a concert, with all tickets sales going toward the Gardner family and its purpose for the event, the guys volunteered without question. The band did not learn until weeks later that the event would be held at The Fillmore, Charlotte’s a hot new music venue.
There will also be a raffle to win a guitar autographed by Nickleback. Raffle tickets are $5, or 5 for $20, or 30 for $100. The drawing will be the day of the event, and the winner need not be present.
For tickets to this event, visit www.Livenation.com.
If you would like to make a donation, please make check payable to Ty Gardner Benefit Account and mail to the attention of Ruby Davis at 1001 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
