Salisbury-Rowan Ministerial Association presents awards

Leadership rotated and awards were presented at the fall kick-off luncheon of the Salisbury-Rowan Ministerial Association at Rowan Regional Medical Center Sept. 29.
Community Leadership awards were presented to Melissa Robson, RN, MHA, and new chief operating officer of RRMC, and Nancy Brown-Perry of the Veterans Administration Medical Center hospital volunteer services.
The Rev.Robert Freeman, president emeritus of SRMA, recognized Yoshiko Otey for volunteer administrative assistance and secretary support for SRMA.
The Rev.Harold Jordan was selected as president for the upcoming year. He is the pastor of Providence Church and is a Hospice chaplain at RRMC.
Chaplain James Cook will co-chair as vice president. He became the hospital’s first full-time chaplain more than 10 years ago. He has been the guest services director and will now concentrate on increasing the hospital chaplain presence. Volunteers are invited for Crop Walk, Hospice, VAMC Veterans Day, and RRMC.
Participating leaders, clergy, new pastors and leadership staff filled the luncheon room to capacity. Speakers included Mayor Susan Kluttz. Robson described the excellence in care sought by extending outreach beyond the patient in the bed to caring about the extended family also.

BHS Class Reunion
The Boyden High School class of 1959 held its 50th class reunion last weekend. The reunion committee members were: Charles Goldman, chairperson; Edith Folger Julian, secretary; Cece Monroe Fuller and Bob Roakes, co-treasurers; Perry Hood, Susan Rouzer Waller, Bud Mickle, Judy Correll Schenk, Phyllis Kenerly Beck, Marilyn Benson Fisher, Eleanor Sifford, Charles Deadwyler, Karen Rawling, Jim Shipton, Rachel Wyatt Safrit, Frances Bailey Lemond, Judy Ann English Deal, and Judy Cress Yarbrough.
A weekend of activities began with a casual gathering at the Crescent Clubhouse with a meal catered by Richard’s Barbecue. The reunion committee members provided the appetizers and desserts.
Each classmate got a gift bag.
Saturday morning activities included a golf tournament at Crescent Golf Club, a historical trolley tour of Salisbury by the group’s own Susan Rouzer Waller and a guided tour of Boyden High School as remembered by the class of ’59.
Saturday night activities began at the Country Club of Salisbury with a welcome by Charles Goldman. A social hour, pictures of the class of ’59 and individual class elementary school pictures were followed by a buffet dinner. Bob Roakes gave the invocation.
Special guests/teachers introduced were: Mr. and Mrs. Bob Greenland; Mr. and Mrs. Don Graham; Coach Joe Ferebee; Barbara Chambers and Jim Anderson.
Phyllis Kenerly Beck, secretary of the class of ’59, presented a memorial service for the 27 deceased members: Norman Allen, Luther Bailey, Ken Clarke, Robert Coffey, Bobby Copley, James Copley, Fredrick Cranford, Larry Godwin, Buford Guy, Burton Harrison, Charles Hoffner, David Hubbard, Alvin James, Patsy Jones Lohr, Dorothy Joyner Barringer, Anita Lee Bringle, Philip McElveen, Richard Morgan, Dwight Nesbit, Thomas Peeler, Shirley Poole Wagoner, Charles Porter, Jerry Redwine, Bob Richardson, Thomas Roberts, Dianne Steelman Pinkston, and Robert Strange. Framed pictures of the members were placed on the memorial table and Ann Bowler Denham sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”
Master of Ceremonies Charles Deadwyler recognized the reunion committee members and Chairman Charles Goldman for their work on the reunion.
Trivia questions about Boyden High School, sports, Salisbury hangouts, etc., were presented to the class and the Boyden High School fight song was sung. Class members were given the opportunity to share memories.
Frank Ramsay was presented with an award for coming the greatest distance for the reunion รณ all the way from Wasilla, Alaska. A basket was made available for donations to Salisbury High School in honor of the class of ’59.
The Boyden High School class of ’59 booklet, prepared by Marilyn Benson Fisher and Rachel Wyatt Safrit, included dedication pages to the deceased members, a directory of members including high school pictures, thoughts, memories and comments from each member, and a copy of the graduation program.

Richfield H.S. Reunion
The Richfield High School Classes of 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1950 met for their annual reunion Saturday, Oct. 3 in the Ridenhor Community Building in Richfield. This year, with the class of 1950 joining the group, there a total of 51 members and guests attened. Boyce Caudle, class of 1947 president, welcomed members.
The Rev. Fred Hill conducted a memorial service for the 39 deceased members. Norman Barringer gave the invocation before the meal, catered by Bud’s Bodacious. A period of business and sharing memories followed.
Flowers used as decorations were given as door prizes. It was agreed to have the 2010 reunion Oct. 2 at noon at the Ridenhour Community Building. Sue Frick Vint and John Morgan Jr. will again serve as reunion chairpersons. Singing the school and fight songs closed the reunion.

Allison Crowell was named the 2009 winner of Childress Idol Oct. 4 at Childress Vineyards.
Crowell also performs with her musician husband, Lee, as Allison Crowell and the Drones.
Sunday afternoon, she played guitar and sang Allison Krauss’ version of the song “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You.”
Crowell won out over 18 other contestants for the title of “Childress Idol,” which is modeled after the popular “American Idol” talent competition.
Crowell will now sing the national anthem during the opening ceremonies on the grandstand of the Barbecue Festival and perform a 10-minute set on the grandstand just before country music stars take the stage in the 104.1 WTQR Guitar Pull.
Crowell is the daughter of Salisbury musician John Rice.
Rockwell High School
The 1959 class of Rockwell High School held its “Golden 50th” reunion at the Salisbury Holiday Inn on Sept. 26, 2009. This class is distinguished by being the last class which graduated from Rockwell High School prior to the consolidation of Rockwell and Granite Quarry High Schools into East Rowan High School in the Fall of 1959.
Sixty persons, including 34 class members, were present for the buffet dinner. The tables were decorated with green candles in hurricane globes and surrounded by greenery and white carnations, the class flower. Class colors were green and white. Gold runners were used on the tables with gold placemats.
Favors at each plate included a miniature box of homemade mints with 50 on them and a gift bag with a brass Rockwell Christmas ornament and a 50th anniversary pen.
Sybil Penninger Baker, chairperson of the reunion planning committee, welcomed classmates and guests. The Rev.David Huddle, class member, gave the invocation.
Cutting and serving of the class cakes, made by class member, Ann Brown Miller, followed dinner. One cake held a golden 50th ornament and the large cake held a model of the rock well for which the town of Rockwell was named. This model well was complete with a working windlass and well bucket. Ann had also made a cake replica of the Rockwell School complex, as it was in 1959.
A memorial display of pictures, obituaries for the 12 deceased classmates was presented by Jo Hoffman Ford, R. L. and Sandra Beaver Mills. The Rev. Huddle conducted a memorial service, complete with the tolling of a bell when each name was read and classmates were asked to silently remember a special moment regarding each of their departed friends.

Master of ceremonies was John N. Trexler, who also entertained the group with memories of the 50s. Door prizes were distributed with each classmate receiving a gift. Door prizes were donated by class members and included gift cards and a number of beautifully handcrafted items. It was agreed that the next reunion would be held in 2011.
