Rabies is a serious health issue
When will people learn that rabies is not a disease to take lightly? If you own a dog or cat in North Carolina and do not vaccinate for rabies as required, you are breaking the law.
This is both an animal and a human health issue. While pet owners need to do their part, there is also the wild animal reservoir for rabies, so vigilance is needed in that area also.
Loopholes and lack of enforcement surround the rabies laws. Currently, irresponsible owners are not penalized for not vaccinating their pets. Unfortunately, enforcement is time consuming and expensive.
Another avenue for the spread of rabies exists and currently is legal. In North Carolina, there are sites (including one in Rowan County) where dogs are allowed to hunt confined wild foxes and coyotes. Many of these animals have been transported into the state, bringing the risk of rabies with them. This so-called sport needs to stop. The potential for exposure is too great, whether to the dogs’ owners or to the general public, to say nothing of the cruelty to the caged prey.
With the 18th case of rabies in Rowan County this year, we must realize this is a real and fatal threat that needs to be more strongly addressed. Make your voice heard either at the county level in Board of Health meetings or at the state level through your elected representatives.
