Saturday’s college roundup on area players …
Catawba’s 14-12 SAC loss in the rain to Mars Hill was generally discouraging on Saturday, but senior outside linebacker Julian Samolu (West Rowan) did turn in another strong outing.
Samolu was the primary tackler four times and also was credited with four assists.
He made a tackle for loss in the third quarter and teamed with linebacker Cory Johnson on a third-down stop in the fourth quarter that forced a Mars Hill punt. Samolu also recovered a field-goal attempt blocked by teammate Terrence Jones.
Samolu has started the last two seasons for the Indians. He’s been involved in 91 tackles in his career and has forced two fumbles. He was fourth on the team in tackles in 2008 and ranks fourth again this season.
n Catawba safety Jaspen Gray (Davie) was in on five tackles and made the first interception of his college career. He’s been credited with two pass breakups and a blocked kick this season.
n Wake Forest sophomore Tristan Dorty (West) made four solo tackles in the Deacons’ 27-24 overtime loss to Boston College.
Dorty made a tackle for a 4-yard loss late in regulation that helped Wake get the ball back for the drive that forced overtime.
n East Carolina’s Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) assisted on four tackles, one for loss, in a 19-14 win against Central Florida.
n Big lineman Gordy Witte (Salisbury) was in on four tackles for Appalachian State in a 20-7 victory against Samford. Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus) added three tackles for the Mountaineers.
n UNC Pembroke’s Derek Davis (South Rowan) made two tackles in a 43-3 rout of Lane.
n Virginia Union’s Hurley Hemphill (NW Cabarrus) had four solo hits and assisted on 10 tackles in a 45-27 win against Chowan on Saturday. Hemphill, who answered to Tré in high school, has an interception and two fumble recoveries this year.
n Ryan Boehm (Davie) started at center for Coastal Carolina in a 28-7 win against N.C. A&T.
n Justin McCauley (A.L. Brown) had three tackles, one for loss, in Averett’s 14-10 win against Washington & Lee.
n N.C. Central kicker Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) was 2-for-2 on PATS in a 49-14 loss to Duke, while Emory & Henry’s Matt Turchin (West) was 4-for-4 on PATs in a 28-3 win against Methodist.
n Livingstone’s Bryan Aycoth (West) was 7-for-15 passing for 66 yards in a 10-0 loss against Lincoln. Chris Peoples (Mooresville) had a productive day for the Blue Bears with eight catches for 132 yards.
n Former A.L. Brown and East Carolina wideout Aundrae Allison, will miss the entire NFL season with a torn ACL in his right knee. He was placed on Injured Reserve by the Jets.
