BOONE ó Armanti Edwards ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead Appalachian State to a 20-7 victory over Samford on Saturday.
Edwards was 19-for-28 passing for 194 yards and a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Gary that gave the Mountaineers a 17-0 lead with 5:06 left in the second quarter. Edwards’ 13-yard scoring run gave Appalachian State (1-2, 1-0 Southern Conference) a 7-0 advantage with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter.
Devon Moore led Appalachian State with 106 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Jason Vitaris kicked field goals of 21 and 44 yards for the Mountaineers, who held Samford (2-2, 0-1) to 86 yards passing ó 4 in the first half ó and just 192 yards of total offense.
Appalachian State’s Ed Gainey stopped a drive with an interception on the 2-yard line.
BC 27, Wake Forest 24
BOSTON ó Just when Wake Forest seemed to be headed for a stunning comeback win, Boston College pulled off its own shocker.
Wes Davis recovered a fumble in overtime to foil the Demon Deacons’ drive for a winning touchdown as the Eagles held on for a 27-24 win behind Dave Shinskie’s three scoring passes on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons had rallied behind Riley Skinner’s two touchdown passes in the last 3:44 of regulation before the Eagles (3-1, 1-1 ACC) went ahead on a 23-yard field goal by Steve Aponavicius on the first series of overtime.
Wake Forest (2-2, 0-1) then got its chance to start at the 25-yard line and moved to a first down at the 4 on four running plays.
Duke 49, NCCU 14
DURHAM ó Thaddeus Lewis threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another score to help Duke beat North Carolina Central 49-14 in the Bull City Gridiron Classic on Saturday night.
It was the first-ever matchup between the two schools, which are located a couple of miles from each other.
Lewis finished with 189 yards passing for the Blue Devils (2-2), who totaled 486 yards on offense. Freshman Desmond Scott led Duke with 100 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Patrick Kurunwune added 93 yards on the ground and a score on 14 attempts.
No. 15 TCU 14, Clemson 10
CLEMSON, S.C. ó No. 15 TCU showed off its stellar defense and bolstered its BCS buster credentials.
Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes and the Horned Frogs (3-0) held Clemson to 125 yards in the second half.
TCU trailed 10-7 entering the fourth quarter. That’s when Dalton ended a 56-yard drive with a 25-yard TD pass to Antoine Hicks to move in front with 12:46 left.
The Tigers (2-2) twice advanced inside TCU’s 20 down the stretch but could not score. C.J. Spiller rushed for 114 yards and had a touchdown.
South Florida 17, No. 18 Florida State 7
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels ran for 126 yards and threw two touchdown passes in his first start in the first meeting between the schools.
It was the first time since Nebraska’s Steve Taylor ran for 139 yards against the Seminoles in 1986 that an opposing quarterback rushed for over 100 yards against them.
Florida State (2-2) lost four fumbles.
