Day of daring
Kudos to the Rowan County United Way for lining up the projects, plans, supplies and volunteers for this year’s Day of Caring. Some people think of United Way as purely a fundraiser, but the agency does a lot of organizing, too. It finds out what work schools and nonprofits need done, and then finds volunteers to tackle those jobs on the Day of Caring. It costs the agencies and volunteers nothing.
For the volunteers, you could call it a day of daring. Many are stepping out of their comfort zones to meet people and take on assignments they might never attempt otherwise. It might be easier for them to stay at work. But the hundreds of volunteers who ate breakfast together Thursday at the outset of the day seemed eager and happy about their assignments.
Memo to those who think they’re too busy for Day of Caring: A day away from the office providing hands-on help can give you a different perspective on a lot of things ó the people you work with, the agency you’re helping and the know-how it takes to perform so-called “manual” labor. Give it a try.
