Catawba’s Jaspen Gray (Davie) and Aaron Cauble (East Rowan), high school rivals in the CPC, combined for a special-teams touchdown to cap Saturday’s 51-0 romp over Livingstone.
With Livingstone punting from its 19, Gray broke through for a block. After a scramble, Cauble recovered the ball for his first college TD.
Gray, a senior, is the starting free safety. Cauble, a junior, is a backup free safety.
The two Indians were born a month apart in 1988. Cauble redshirted in 2006, did not play in 2007 and made a comeback last season that featured his blocked punt against Carson-Newman.
* Wake Forest defensive end Tristan Dorty (West Rowan) was in on six tackles and had a third-quarter sack in a 24-17 win against Stanford.
* East Carolina defensive end Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) stopped a fourth-quarter West Virginia drive with a fumble recovery, but the Mountaineers won 35-20.
* Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) kicked a 35-yard field goal and a PAT to help North Carolina Central take an early lead, but Liberty rallied to beat the Eagles 35-10.
* Matt Turchin (West) kicked a 24-yard field goal and two PATS in Emory & Henry’s 31-14 win against Greensboro.
* DB Raeshon McNeil (Davie) made four solo tackles for Notre Dame in Saturday’s 38-34 loss against Michigan.
* ASU’s Anthony Willams (NWC) was in on seven tackles in a 40-35 loss to McNeese State.
* There are no immediate plans to redshirt Appalachian State true freshman Jamill Lott (A.L. Brown), but a broken finger will sideline him another week or two.
Lott could figure into the quarterback mix in the future, but he’ll be a receiver this season.
* Coastal Carolina’s Ben Erdman (West) punted 10 times for a 33.8 average in Saturday’s 24-17 win against Monmouth.
* Phillip Hilliard (Salisbury) averaged only 33.6 yards on seven punts in a 24-13 loss against UNC Pembroke, but he had three punts downed inside the UNCP 20.
