Area sports briefs: Playoff loss for Steedley

New Britain lefty Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) was the losing pitcher on the final day of his 2009 season.
Connecticut beat New Britain 2-0 in Sunday’s Double-A playoff game and advanced to the Eastern League championship series.
Steedley allowed one run in an early relief appearance in the third inning.
Steedley was 2-2 with New Britain and 6-2 for the season.
* Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) ended his season with a .261 batting average, a homer and 22 RBIs at three stops in Seattle’s farm system.
* Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) ended the season with a .264 batting average, two homers and 28 RBIs between Bristol and Kannapolis in the White Sox farm system.
* Jerry Sands (Catawba) is still playing. The Great Lakes Loons, a Dodgers farm club, remain alive in the Midwest League playoffs and won again on Sunday.
* Tim Smith (Catawba) finished the season 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA while pitching for Mets farm teams in Savannah and Kingsport.
* Mitch Dening’s homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Greenville Drive a 3-2 win over the Asheville Tourists and a sweep of their SAL semifinal series.
The Greenville-Lakewood championship series starts tonight in Lakewood, Ohio.
– Hole-in-one
China Grove’s Roger Taylor made a hole-in-one on the 152-yard No. 17 hole at Pudding Ridge Golf Club in Mocksville on Saturday.
Taylor made the first ace of his career with a 7-iron. Josh Scarborough, Eric Barnhardt and Kyle Barnhardt witnessed the shot.
– Pfeiffer athletics
Nick Brindley’s hat trick led Pfeiffer to a 6-1 win against Belmont Abbey at Lefko Field on Saturday. The Falcons are 3-2. It was their CC opener.
* Belmont Abbey’s women’s soccer team beat Pfeiffer 4-2 on Saturday. Alyssa Wombwell and Megan Blevins scored for the Falcons (2-2-1, 0-1).
* Pfeiffer’s volleyball team lost 3-1 at Lees-McRae on Saturday. Kristina Mordini led the Falcons with eight kills.
* Pfeiffer’s men’s cross country team was fifth out of 10 teams in the 8K Pre-Regional Meet held at Wingate on Saturday. Matt Tyndall ran fifth for the Falcons in 28:20.
* Pfeiffer’s women’s cross country team was third out of 10 teams in the 6K Pre-Regional Meet at Wingate. Pfeiffer’s Lindsey Phillips was third in 25:28.
– Catawba athletics
Catawba’s women were fifth and the men seventh in the Pre-Regional Meet held at Wingate on Saturday.
Senior Maleah Cole paced the women. She was sixth in a time of 25:47 over the 6K course. Freshman Justin Smith led the men on the 8K course. He ran a time of 30:32 and finished 19th.
* Virginia Wesleyan topped Catawba’s field hockey team 3-2 in overtime on Sunday at Frock Field. Catawba (0-5) got goals from Jamie Swain and Megan High. Bronwen Gainsford made eight saves.
– Prep cross country
Gray Stone Day’s boys won the 5K Cannon Invitational on Saturday.
Gray Stone’s Dalton Wally finished second in 17:26.99. Gray Stone’s Harrison Latimer was 12th in 18:21.56.
A.L. Brown was sixth. The Wonders were led by fourth-place finisher Larry Scaggs was fourth in 17:39.73.
Salisbury’s Nick Summers won a close race with Wally in 17:26:57. Salisbury’s Philip Tonseth was sixth in 18:01.64. The Hornets finished 10th overall.
Gray Stone was fourth in the girls race. Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer was fourth individually in 21:08.
Weddington won the girls meet. A.L. Brown was eighth.
