Kalima Tribal presents belly dancing workshops Saturday

Kalima Tribal presents a day full of belly dance workshops and performance Saturday, Sept. 12, at Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St.
The “Tribal Sampler” workshops take place 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. where participants sample a variety of skills in tribal and tribal fusion belly dance. The cost is $15 per class, or $50 for four classes.
There will be chair massage available all day and vendors with belly dance merchandise.
Also participating will be Studio 318, Torque, The Midnight Magnolias, and drummer Abu Zouz.
Classes:
– Dancer Drummer Communication with Abu Zouz óDrummers, bring your drums. Dancers, be prepared to dance.
– Burlesque, The Big Tease with Johnna McMillan ó Participants will learn traditional steps and moves, combined with contemporary elements. Attendees should wear close-fitting clothing, and bring elbow length gloves, a nightie or slip that fits easily over clothing, and a bra (rear fastening) to be worn over the clothing and removed during instruction.
– Wicked Intentions: Delving into Dark Fusion with The Midnight Magnolias ó Gothic Belly Dance, dark fusion dance technique, music, drills and dance combinations. Interactive group discussions about costuming, makeup, archetypes, and appropriate settings.
– Basically Hot: Performing with Fire the Smart Way with The Midnight Magnolias ó Instruction in fuels, basics of fire safety and setting up a performance area, how to train fire safety members, and proper care of fire tools. Discussion about hair and costuming for dancers that is appropriate and safe. Will go over basic technique for staff, poi, fans, palms and torches. Feel free to bring your own props and questions.
No actual fire will be demonstrated by the instructors or students during this workshop.
– Tribal Improv with Studio 318 ó Instruction in basic tribal style moves, dancing in duos, combos.
– Zills and Drills: Studio 318 ó Group will drill basic rhythms and technique, learn to travel and move with the triplet rhythm and beledi rhythm.
– Hair and Make up Workshop: Studio 318 ó Learn techniques and applications for different styles of tribal make up and hair. Students should bring their own makeup (eyelashes, face jewelry) and hair accessories (flowers, pendants, pins, quills, feathers, jewelry).
– Tribal Swords with Kalima ó Learn how to pick, care for, and use a sword in your dance.
– Costuming on the Thrift with Kalima ó Tips and tricks on substituting, deconstructing, and making inexpensive things so you can look good and save money.
The evening performance, “Tribal Frolic,” will be at 7:30 p.m. with admission of $10 at the door.
