Salisbury posted a shutout in a showdown between the county’s traditional tennis powers.
The Hornets won 9-0 against visiting East Rowan on Monday afternoon. Salisbury is the defending 2A champion, and East routinely makes the 3A playoffs.
Hannah Lebowitz, Joy Loeblein, Erika Nelson, Katelyn Storey, Sierra Davis and Mary Margaret Mills earned straight-set victories for the Hornets (5-0). Lebowitz-Anna Page, Nelson-Storey and Loeblein-Davis all pulled out 8-1 decisions against the Mustangs (3-2).
The closest match capped singles play. Mills claimed a 6-2, 7-5 win against Hannah Pressley at No. 6.
Lebowitz (against Brittany Honeycutt at No. 1) and Nelson (against Megan Bullins at No. 3) were 6-0, 6-0 winners. Storey (6-2, 6-0 against Kayela Wilson at No. 4) and Davis (6-3, 6-0 against Katie Cassady at No. 5) also finished up with an unblemished set. Loeblein won 6-1, 6-2 in her match with second-seeded Devan Corpening.
