The Kannapolis Intimidators won their eighth straight game by beating the Bowling Green Hot Rods 5-3 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday.
Drew Garcia plated two runs with a double in the bottom of the sixth to give the Intimidators their final margin. Garcia has driven in seven runs in his last three games.
Tim Beckham, the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft, stayed hot for the Hot Rods. He went 3-for-4.
n Minor leagues
Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) had two of Clinton’s four hits in an 8-0 loss to Peoria on Saturday.
n Catawba football
Catawba will provide a fan bus if there is enough interest for the football season opener at St. Augustine’s on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Those interested need to contact the Catawba athletic department as early as possible to reserve a seat. Kickoff for the game is set for 1:30 p.m. The cost of the trip will be $25 for the bus and includes lunch before the game. Money will be needed for game ticket and additional food.
The bus will leave from the Shuford Stadium parking lot at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The bus will return to Salisbury following the game and will arrive back at approximately 7:30 pm. Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus) is one of eight Appalachian State players mentioned on the Sporting News preseason NCAA Division I FCS All-America team.
The senior defensive tackle received honorable mention recognition.
n Local golf
Salisbury resident Frank Adams won the eGolf Professional Tour’s South Charlotte Classic on Friday.
The Laurinburg native won his fifth career tour title with a final-round 68, good for a three-shot win. It was the first win for Adams since 2005.
Adams is part of an athletic family. A brother, Stewart, played linebacker at Catawba. Another brother, Russ, played shortstop for UNC’s baseball team and has played in 286 games in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays.
n Prep volleyball
South Rowan got 16 kills and 15 digs from Kayla Morrow in a 25-22, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21 win against Robinson. Tayler Smith had 10 digs. Amber Waldroup had seven kills.
n In a 25-5, 25-9, 25-20 breeze past Central Cabarrus, Morrow had nine kills. Chelsea McManus had five and Maddy Cook three for the Raiders (3-0).
Nicole Barringer had 19 assists.
