Helping the Less Fortunate Ministries has opened an indoor yard sale at its 1305 Richard St. building.
The yard sale, which will remain up indefinitely and is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., includes more than 3,000 items, such as furniture and appliances.
Billie Ozment, vice president of the ministry, said proceeds from the yard sale will go to build a survival skills training center for people who are homeless.
The center will provide housing and skills training until people who are homeless are able to find jobs and support themselves on their own.
The ministry has plans for a 20,000 square-foot building near the current building. Construction will start Jan. 1 if all goes according to plan, Ozment said. She said the property is currently owned by KMD Construction but Helping the Less Fortunate Ministries is in talks with the construction company to get the land.
Salisbury contracts with Asplundh
The City of Salisbury has contracted with Asplundh Tree Expert Company to provide a safe route for contractors installing Fiber to the Home products. Asplundh will be reviewing city streets, utility poles and vegetation outgrowth to ensure that current right of way maintenance provides the maximum safety for fiber product installers. Small tunnel trimming may include snipping of branches that pose a potential hazard for fiber service installers during placement of fiber products.
Through Aug. 21, Asplundh will be working within a two-mile radius of the following cross streets:
– Brenner Avenue and Horah Street
– Brenner Avenue and Link Avenue
– West Dave and Second Street
– North Shaver Street and Grady Street

La Fiesta de Rowan set for Sept. 26
The Salisbury Rowan Hispanic Coalition will hold La Fiesta de Rowan on Sept. 26 from noon to 6 p.m. The event will include music, raffles, games, the musical group La Dulzura Band, a Spanish dance competition, a clown, and a fashion show.

Grant applications being accepted
The Salisbury Community Appearance commission is now receiving applications for Municipal Service District Incentive grants and Innes Street Improvement grants. Properties located within the Municipal Service District or on the Innes Street Corridor are eligible.
Owners or tenants can apply for assistance for the exterior rehabilitation of the property.
Applications can be submitted to the Community Planning Services office at 217 S. Main St. Applications will be accepted throughout the year as long as funds remain.
Only new projects which have not yet begun will be considered, and all projects must be finished by June 30.
