Area sports: Intimidators lose; field set for regional

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 6-3 at Lake County on Monday.
The meeting was likely the last ever between the two clubs. Lake County, which is in Ohio, will switch from the SAL to the Midwest League next season.
– Minor leagues
Brad Holt (Albemarle, UNC Wilmington) is making a rapid rise through the New York Mets farm system but ran into control problems on Sunday.
Holt walked six batters in six innings and took a loss. He’s 2-5 with a 5.36 ERA since joining Double-A Binghamton. Holt, 22, was 4-1 with 54 strikeouts in 431/3 innings in advanced Class-A ball.
– College soccer
Carson-Newman was the unanimous pick by league coaches to win the SAC women’s soccer race.
Catawba was picked second. Wingate was the choice for third.
Catawba midfielder Nikki Blackwelder and keeper Lindsay Webster were named to the preseason All-SAC second team.
– Legion baseball
Irmo-Chapin beat Conway to win South Carolina’s state tournament. Irmo-Chapin won its first state title since 1995 and completed the field for the eight-team Southeast Regional.
Rowan plays host team Sumter, S.C., in its opening game in the double-elimination event on Thursday night.
Rowan is bidding for its first trip to the Legion World Series since 1996. The World Series this year is in Fargo, N.D.
– Local golf
Veteran Ronnie Eidson won the Dugan Aycock Davidson County Amateur at Lexington Golf Club by one shot over teenager Justin Clement, who recently graduated from West Davidson and will play collegiately at UNC Greensboro.
Eidson shot 67-66 ó 133. It was the third Davidson Amateur title for Eidson and his second straight.
* The McCanless Couples held an 18-hole tournament with 30 golfers participating.
The format was 3-3-3 on the front and Captain’s Choice on the back. Matt and Liz Murphy shot 63 for first place. Gene and Mary Seaford shot 67 and took second after a scorecard playoff.
Nancy Ceremuga made the longest putt for women on No. 14. Matt Murphy made the longest putt for men on No. 2.
Liz Murphy (on No. 3) and Brett Leslie (No. 10) took closest-to-the-pin honors.
The McCanless Couples will play at Asheboro Country Club on Saturday.
* Salisbury’s Allison Lee and Madison Kennedy participated in the CGA’s Girls Twin States Tournament held at Bentwinds Country Club in Fuquay-Varina.
Lee shot 82-90 ó 172 to tie for 54th. Kennedy shot 92-82 ó 174 to tie for 56th.
Gastonia’s Courtney Taylor won the event. She shot 73-70 ó 143 to finish 1-under.
– South girls golf
The first day of practice and tryouts for the South Rowan girls golf team is Monday, Aug. 10, at 9 a.m. at Warrior. Contact coach Josh Vinson at 704-202-9195 or vinsonjt@rss.k12.nc.us for information.
– East triathlon camp
The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch, will hold its last triathlon camp for the summer on Aug. 10-14.
The camp is for boys and girls ages 8-15. Cost is $60 week for YMCA members and $90 for non-members. Camp hours are 9-12:15 daily. Camp will close with a triathlon competition on Friday. Campers must supply their own bikes.

– Tennis lessons
Salisbury Parks and Recreation offers tennis lessons for ages 6-10 at the Salisbury Civic Center. Lessons are Wednesdays, Aug. 5 and 12, from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $9 per lesson. Camp is conducted by Jeff Childress of Catawba. Contact the Civic Center at 704-638-5275.
