Area sports briefs: Field set for state tournament

The eight-team field is now set for the American Legion state tournament, which begins Saturday at East Carolina’s Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Rocky Mount (20-4) became the last qualifier when it closed out a three-game sweep of Cary in the Area I championship series Monday. Pitt County, the other Area I representative, is the state tournament host.
Wilmington (champion) and Duplin-Sampson (runner-up) emerged from Area II.
Cherryville (27-9) swept Shelby (26-7) in the Area IV finals, and the Rowan County-Mooresville series in Area III opened Monday with a Rowan victory.
If Rowan wins the series, it will face Duplin-Sampson on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Greenville. If Rowan loses the series, it will play Rocky Mount at 4:30 p.m.
Shelby will meet Wilmington in the tourney opener at 9:30 a.m., and the first day will close with a 7:30 p.m. game between Cherryville and Pitt County.
n Minor Leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 6-1 on the road against the Charleston RiverDogs on Monday.
Manny Banuelos, an 18-year-old lefty, allowed one run on four hits in 52/3 innings. He was removed from the game after he was struck in the legs by a grounder off the bat of Kyle Shelton.
Kannapolis’ Nevin Griffith (0-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in four innings. He faced six batters in the fifth inning, all of whom reached, before he was pulled in favor of Charlis Burdie.
Burdie and Leroy Hunt did not surrender a hit the rest of the way.
Neither manager was around to see much of the game. Umpire Bryan Dormaier tossed Charleston’s Torre Tyson for arguing a balk in the top of the first, and Dormaier gave Ernie Young the boot in the top of the third for arguing a call at home plate.
Kannapolis (14-10) and Hickory are tied for first place in the Northern Division.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 0-for-4 with a walk in Bristol’s 7-5 loss to Danville in Appalachian League action Monday.
n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) went 0-for-3 with a walk for Clinton in a 6-0 win against Midwest League foe Peoria.
n Wood bat leagues
Asheboro’s Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) did not go deep in the Coastal Plain League’s Home Run Derby at Buck Hardee Field on Monday.
Lyerly and Forest City’s Wade Moore (West Rowan) are slated to participate in today’s All-Star Game.
n Bobby Jackson hoopsThe playoff games in Bobby Jackson’s annual summer camp begin today at Hall Gym. The first game is at 5:30 p.m.

n GARS golf
Seventy-two GARS members played at Lexington Country Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Tom Talbert with a net of 62.85.
Low ‘B’ player was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 58.33. Low ‘C’ player was Everett Frye with a net of 59.97. Low ‘D’ player was Tom Longo with a net of 65.32.
GARS member Ken Miller made a hole-in-one on the 136-yard 13th hole at Corbin Hills on July 6.
n McCanless golf
The McCanless Couples played a nine-hole match with 16 golfers participating. The format was best ball.
Don Smith and Yvonne Barger shot 35 and won a scorecard playoff with Ty Cobb and Beverly Cobb.
Larry Ries and Carolyn Ries shot 38 and took third in a scorecard playoff.
Other scores were: Harry Owens and Jan Godwin (38), Andy Canup and Dolly Canup (38), David Huneycutt and Monica Green (41), Tim Earnhardt and Jessica Earnhardt (41) and Chris Livengood and Sheila Livengood (43).
Andy Canup won closest to the pin. Carolyn Ries won the longest putt.
n The adult/child tournament will be held at McCanless on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m.

n West soccer info
West Rowan soccer workouts will run through Thursday of this week and take place next Monday and Tuesday. Tryouts will be held from Aug. 5-7.
The workouts and tryouts are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. on their respective days.
n East soccer tryouts
East Rowan soccer tryouts will be held Monday, Aug. 3 , from 4:45-7 p.m. Anyone interested in playing should report to the practice field with soccer cleats as well as running shoes.

n West tennis tryouts
Anyone interested in playing girls tennis for West Rowan High should be at practice/tryouts on Monday, Aug. 3, at the West High tennis courts. Everyone should bring physicals that day.
n North football camp
North Rowan will hold its Cavalier Youth Football Camp from July 27-30.
The camp is open to players in grades 2-8. It runs from 5:30-8 p.m. nightly. The cost is $25. Parents may register participants on Monday.
This is a non-contact camp intended to be both fun and instructional, with emphasis on safety, sportsmanship and techniques.
The first day of official football practice at North Rowan High is Saturday, Aug. 1. Practice begins at 8:30 a.m.
All athletes in grades 9-12 are reminded to have a completed physical on file. Sign in at the field house. Players should bring cleats, T-shirts and shorts.

Salisbury High School will conduct athletic physicals on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. The cost is $10. Pick up physical forms at the school office.
