The Kannapolis Intimidators fell 3-1 to the Savannah Sand Gnats on the road on Wednesday.
Savannah pitcher Jeurys Familia had a perfect game until Kenny Williams singled for Kannapolis (7-6) in the sixth.
Gnats closer Rhiner Cruz picked up his 17th save.
n Kane County’s David Thomas (Catawba) was 1-for-4 in an 11-0 loss against South Bend on Wednesday.
Thomas is batting .276.
n Bristol’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 0-for-4 Wednesday in a 6-3 win against Bluefield. Wagner’s batting average dropped to .293.
n Ogden’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) was 1-for-3 on Wednesday in a 4-1 win against Great Falls.
Sands is batting .407.
n Prep football
North Rowan rising junior cornerback Darryl Jackson Jr. will compete in the Friday Night Lights Camp at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday, July 24, along with many of the nation’s top recruits.
The University of Florida coaching staff will be on hand at “The Swamp.”
This will be the last stop for Jackson in a long summer of camps and combines. He’s on several “watch lists” for prospects in the Class of 2011.
n Wood bat leagues
Asheboro’s Nathan Furr (Catawba) pitched a dominating complete game in a 10-2 win against first-place Forest City on Wednesday.
Furr went nine innings and allowed three hits and no earned runs. He walked one and struck out nine.
Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) knocked in two runs for Forest City.
Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) had one hit for Forest City and scored a run.
n Prep baseball
The Lake Norman pitching trio of Nick Lomascolo, Scottie Williams and Ross Whitley was named to the Baseball Coaches Association 3A All-State team.
Lomascolo and Whitley are Catawba signees.
n Prep softball
East Rowan shortstop Ericka Nesbitt and pitcher Chelsea White were named to the Softball Coaches Association 3A All-State team.
Both are rising juniors. White was Rowan County Player of the Year as a sophomore and co-winner of the award as a freshman.
n Local tennis
Michael Childress, 10, won the Daves Mountain USTA tournament held recently in Asheboro. Playing up in the 12-year-old boys division, Childress won 6-2, 6-3; 1-6, 6-3, 10-6; and 6-1, 6-2.
n Golf tournament
Several South Rowan graduates have formed the South Rowan Alumni Association to provide scholarships for worthy students at South.
A golf tournament is the first fundraiser for the organization.
The tournament will be held on Aug. 15th at 1:30 p.m. at the Warrior Golf Club.
The format is four-man Captain’s Choice with an entry fee of $240 per team.
Gift certificates will be presented to the top places.
Each participant will receive a chance to win a Taylor Made R9 driver.
Entry forms can be picked up at the Warrior and Dale’s Sporting Goods in downtown China Grove.

n Local golf
The eGolf Tour’s annual Southern Open is being contested this week at The Club at Irish Creek and Warrior.
Kyle Dobbs and Christo Greyling shared the opening-round lead after carding matching 65s at Irish Creek.
The shot of the day came from Jay Haas Jr., who carded a hole-in-one on No. 6 at Warrior en route to a 5-under 66.
Haas is the son of former PGA player and current Champions Tour regular Jay Haas Sr.
n North Middle football
Anyone in grades 7-8 wishing to play football at North Rowan Middle School should attend an organizational meeting at the school on Monday, July 20.
All prospects need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and a copy of a physical from the past year. Parents should attend.

n East boosters
The East Rowan Booster Club is selling National Wild Turkey Federation raffle tickets for $10 apiece. All proceeds go to East Rowan Booster Club. Tickets will be on sale until July 23 at the school front office. Call 704-279-5232 for information.
n Rowan youth footballThe Rowan County Youth Football League (Y.F.L.) recently held its monthly meeting. Playing and registration sites are being set.
Registration for the upcoming season will be Aug. 29-Sept. 5, with sites to be announced. R.C.Y.F.L. a non-profit league, serves Rowan County football players and cheerleaders in grades 3-6. Teams are formed by school attendance. Registration will remain $80 for the third straight year.
The league is asking for volunteer football and cheerleading coaches from all corners of the county.
North Rowan and West Rowan High are again locked in as game sites. Sponsors are needed for several teams.
n East triathlon camp
The East Rowan YMCA is holding a triathlon training camp July 20-24 for grades 3-8. Camp runs from 9 until noon daily. Youngsters will receive individual instruction in swimming, running, and biking.
The camp will close with a triathlon competition on Friday, July 24. Registration costs are $60 for YMCA members and $90 for non-members and include a dri-fit shirt and speed laces. Contact Sarah Zander or David Freeze at 704-279-1742.
