Area sports briefs: LSU phenom joins Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators have added first-rounder Jared Mitchell, the 23rd pick in the recent MLB draft, to the roster. He was named Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series.
Mitchell, an outfielder from national champion LSU, joined the Intimidators Thursday. The 20-year-old had 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 35 steals as a junior while batting .327.
The 6-foot, 200-pound Mitchell was also a wideout on LSU’s football team and was part of the Tigers’ 2007 championship team in that sport.
* Mitchell didn’t play Thursday, but Jon Gilmore singled in Drew Garcia with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Intimidators to a 5-4 win against Lakewood.
Kannapolis starter Dexter Carter struck out 14 batters in seven innings, a season high for the Intimidators.
Josh Phegley hit his first professional homer for Kannapolis.
– American Legion
Rowan-Stanly and South Rowan-Mooresville were rained out on Thursday. Rowan plays at Stanly tonight. South is at Mooresville.
– Seaford beats age
Gene Seaford, 78, shot better than his age when he fired a 77 at Warrior Golf Club on Wednesday.
Seaford played from the white tees, not the gold tees that seniors have the opportunity to use.
Seaford played with Rufty Patterson, Matt Murphy and Liz Murphy.
– Minor leagues
San Diego Padres draft pick Chris Ahearn (Catawba) remains sidelined with a hip injury in Arizona although he has improved enough to take BP and field grounders.
Those who followed ACC football in the late 1950s will remember Bobby Bunch, who is Ahearn’s grandfather. Bunch, 73, was a starting quarterback for South Carolina.
* Kane County’s David Thomas (Catawba) has missed the last five games with a left hamstring injury.
– Local golf
Roy Dixon won the club championship at the Country Club of Salisbury. Glenn Dixon was second. Stephen Bullock was third.
Bob Humble won the men’s ‘B’ division. James Hardin was second. Stewart Dula was third.
John Kyger won the senior men’s club championship.
Bob Ingram was second. Bill Troxler won net, with Victor Wallace second.
Richard Everson won the club championship for super senior men. Jim Wagamon won net honors.
Susan Morris was women’s club champion. Patti Glassgow was second.
Cyndi Carmazzi won the ‘B division. Sydney Chmiel was second.Junior girls champion (ages 10-12) is Grace Yatawara. Catherine Parks was girls champion (ages 13-17).
Junior boys champion is John Murphy III. Boys champion is Joseph Rusher.
* The Horace Billings Rowan County Amateur at Corbin Hills begins today with qualifying.
* Eric Edwards will compete in the N.C. Boys 13-under Championship.
The tournament will be held at Asheboro Golf Club July 13-14.
– Alumni hoops game
A Rowan County Alumni men’s basketball game is scheduled for July 25 at 5 p.m. at Livingstone.
Any alumni who played at a local high school is eligible to play. The game will benefit local charities.

The camp runs July 19-23.

– SHS soccer camp
Salisbury soccer coach Tom Sexton will be holding two camps in July.
A skills camp is scheduled July 20-24 while a team camp is set for July 27-31. Each camp is $90 or $160 for both. The camps will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Salisbury soccer practice facility located beside the old Wiley Elementary School.
Registration and physical forms can be picked up at the Salisbury High office and at all feeder schools to Salisbury.
