Salisbury High wins YCI awards

Salisbury High School YCI Club ó Youth Commission International ó was honored at the 2009 Annual Regional Eagle Award Banquet in May with four awards, including the YCI Club Eagle Award, given to a school which has completed active leadership and made a positive impact on its campus and in the community.
Lauren Loebleinwas the recipient of The Legacy Award, the highest honor given at the awards banquet to a high school senior who made a difference on middle and high school campuses. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship.
Aubrey Barton, club vice president, received the Outstanding Christian Leadership Eagle Award. This award is given to an individual who shows strong leadership skills and awareness of the need of Christ on campuses among students. Barton gave her testimony on what YCI has meant to her.
Faculty member and co-sponsor of Salisbury’s YCI club, Crystal Morgan won the “YCI Faculty Eagle Award.” This is given to a sponsoring faculty member who has made a positive impact with the students consistent with the mission of YCI.
Pastor Jermey Varner, Campus Pastor at Salisbury High received the YCI High School, Campus Pastor Award. This award is given to a campus pastor who is making a positive impact with the students consistent with the mission of YCI.
Other local students who were honored with Outstanding Christian Leadership Eagle Awards include Tiffany Hollar from Erwin Middle School, Nate Allman from Southeast Middle School, and Katelyn Roberts from Corriher-Lipe Middle School.
Brian Farmer, of Knox Middle School won the YCI Middle School Campus Pastor Award.
YCI is a Christian organization that is run by students for their community. The Salisbury High club, with Morgan and Adam Byerly as co-sponsors, meets every Wednesday from September to May at 6:45 a.m. in the media center. It is open to any student who would like to attend.
Programs the Salisbury YCI sponsored included “See You at the Pole,” “May Day”, faith-based concerts, and prayer walks.
There are currently YCI clubs, which are student-initiated, in every middle school and high school in the county except North Rowan High and West Rowan Middle School.
Clubs provide opportunities for leadership, character, academic, social, civic responsibility and spiritual development.
