National sports briefs: Irving injured in accident

Associated Press
RALEIGH ó Officials say N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving has been charged with careless and reckless driving after a wreck that broke his leg and collapsed a lung.
State Highway Patrol spokesman Capt. Everett Clendenin said the one-vehicle wreck occurred about 4:40 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 40 in Johnston County. He said Irving’s vehicle ran off the road twice before striking two trees.
Clendenin said troopers believe Irving may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The school said Irving was expected to undergo surgery Sunday night at WakeMed Trauma Center in Raleigh.
The junior’s status for the upcoming season was not immediately known.
Irving had 84 tackles last season despite missing time with injuries.

NFL
GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. ó Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson is in no hurry to have his team play more than one annual regular-season game in Toronto.
Wilson told The Associated Press he’d prefer waiting “two or three years” to determine whether the northern experiment is a success before he’d consider reworking the contract reached last year with Toronto-based Rogers Communications. The Bills are locked into playing five regular-season ó one a year ó and three preseason games in Toronto under the agreement which runs through 2012.
GOLFCROMWELL, Conn. ó Kenny Perry shot 63 to finish with a tournament-record 258 and win the Travelers Championship by three strokes over Paul Goydos and David Toms.
The win also moves Perry to the front of the FedEx Cup standings.
n ROCHESTER, N.Y. ó Jiyai Shin picked up her fifth title in 11 months with a seven-stroke victory at the Wegmans LPGA.
n ENDICOTT, N.Y. ó Lonnie Nielsen shot a 9-under to beat Fred Funk and Ronnie Black by three shots for his first Champions Tour victory of the year.
TENNISNEWPORT BEACH, Calif. ó Three-time Grand Slam champion Lindsay Davenport has given birth to her second child.
She gave birth to a girl named Lauren Andrus Davenport Leach on Saturday.
TRACKEUGENE, Ore. ó Shawn Crawford blew away the field in the 200-meter finals at the U.S. track and field championships in a wind-aided time of 19.73 seconds.
Allyson Felix joined Crawford as America’s other 200-meter champion.
The 31-year-old Crawford beat newcomer Charles Clark by .27 seconds to win his fourth national title, dating to 2001. Wallace Spearmon finished third to nab the final spot on the U.S. team heading to worlds later this summer.
Tyson Gay has already qualified in the 100 and 200 thanks to his world championships in 2007.
