Area sports briefs: Rowan Juniors prevail

The Rowan Junior Legion team won again Wednesday, taking a 6-3 victory against Mocksville.
Will Johnson tossed five innings and struck out seven. Bradley Robbins shut down Mocksville in the seventh for the save.
Luke Thomas’ seventh-inning homer with Will Sapp on base provided insurance for Rowan.
Sapp had three hits. Thomas and Chris Jacobs had two hits and two RBIs each.
n Rowan beat Lexington 11-5 on Tuesday. Thomas had three RBIs. Jamey Blalock had two hits.
Alex Bost pitched five innings for the win and got relief help from Andy Austin.
n The Salisbury Cavornets beat Stanly 6-5 in nine innings Wednesday at Robertson Stadium. Matt Laurens knocked in Matt Mauldin with a walk-off single after the Cavornets had stranded the winning run at third base in the seventh and eighth.
Patrick Snider, John Knox, Dakota Brown, Jeremy Forbis and Kyle Wolfe had two hits each.
Dusty Agner threw 62/3 innings before giving way to Patrick Snider and winner Mason Jennings.
n The Cavornets outscored Lexington 12-6 on Monday. Brown was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs. Philip Tonseth had five RBIs. Knox had three hits.
n Minor leagues
Right-handed pitcher Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) has been released by the New Britain Rock Cats, Minnesota’s Double-A team.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had an RBI single in Bristol’s 4-3 win over Greeneville on Wednesday. It was Wagner’s first professional hit.n Legion baseball
Mocksville’s American Legion team was held to five hits in a 6-3 loss at Wilkes on Wednesday.
Wilkes, which hit two solo homers, broke a 3-3 tie with Mocksville (8-8, 5-7) in the seventh.
n Mooresville’s Legion team lost 7-6 at Concord in 12 innings.
Billy Nantz hit a homer for the Moors (6-5, 5-5). Chase LeVan and Eric Manser had two hits each.
Dalton Shuford had two doubles for Concord (9-9, 6-8), which rallied for five runs in the seventh to tie and won on a 12th-inning error.n Wood bat leagues
Asheboro’s Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) had three hits in a 5-4 win against Martinsville on Wednesday. Lyerly is batting .370 in the CPL.
n Rampage football
The defending champion Rowan Rampage football team will play at home (Knox Middle School) this Saturday against Greensboro’s Triad HotShots. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for ages 7-13. Children 6-under are admitted for free.
n Wachovia Cup
Salisbury finished second to Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in the Wachovia Cup standings for 2A.
The Wachovia Cup measures overall athletic excellence.
Charlotte Catholic won the Cup in 3A. Lake Norman placed second, and Marvin Ridge was fourth.
n Hole-in-one
Justin Blizzard made a hole-in-one at Foxwood Golf Course on Monday. He aced the 165-yard No. 9 hole with a 6-iron.
