Area sports briefs: Locals in Nike Nationals

Salisbury rising junior Romar Morris had the 10th-best time in the 200 meters prelims at the Nike Outdoor Nationals held at North Carolina A&T on Saturday.
Morris was clocked in 22.36 seconds in the Emerging Elite division.
The top eight sprinters advanced to the final. Geoffrey Stewart (N.J.) was No. 8 in 22.17. Zamir Thomas (N.J.) won the final in 21.42.
n North Rowan rising sophomore Teaunna Cuthbertson was 31st in the girls long jump Saturday at the Nationals. Cuthbertson’s best effort was 16 feet, 21/4 inches.
Andrea Geubelle (Wash.) won the event with a leap of just over 20 feet.

South Rowan athletes who were not present when the all-county team photo was taken at Catawba are pictured above. They are Caleb O’Neal, Nathaniel Winslow, Cadarreus Mason, Dalton Johnson, B.J. Grant and Michael York.
n Minor leagues
Belmont second baseman Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) has signed with the Chicago White Sox.
Wagner, 20, is expected to open his pro career with Bristol (Va.) in the rookie-level Appalachian League. The Appy League season starts June 23.
n Major leagues
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) made a brief appearance in the New York Mets’ 3-1 loss against Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Parnell entered the game with one out in the eighth to relieve Johan Santana. He walked Pat Burrell and allowed a single to B.J. Upton.
Pedro Feliciano replaced Parnell and got a double-play ball off the bat of Carl Crawford to get out of the jam.
n Minor leagues
Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched in the Florida State League All-Star Game on Saturday.
He allowed two hits and was charged with an unearned run in an inning of work. Steedley’s South team lost to the North stars 6-4.
n American Legion
Mooresville survived four Stanly homers and won 11-9 on Saturday.
Ian Walters pitched six strong innings for the win. The Moors were cruising 11-3 going to the ninth.
Eric Manser hit a two-run homer for Mooresville. Jacob Mays had two RBIs. Nathan Abraham had two hits.
Corey Dick hit two solo homers for Stanly. Justin Culp belted a grand slam in the ninth. Alex Robichaud had the other homer for Stanly.
n Junior Legion
Carson beat the Salisbury Cavornets 5-4 on Saturday.
Joseph Basinger’s single knocked in Zack Grkman with the winning run in the seventh. Grkman opened the seventh with a double.
Grkman had a two-run single for Carson in the fifth. Jonathan Barringer’s hit drove in Mitch Galloway, who had doubled, in the sixth.
Grkman had three hits. Barringer had two.
Ethan Free pitched five innings for Carson, struck out four, allowed two hits and left with the game tied 3-3. Caleb Trexler earned the win in relief. He allowed a run in two innings.
Wes Barker had a run-scoring single for Salisbury.
n College baseball
Former Belmont Abbey coach Kermit Smith was named the new head coach at Lander.
