Also chosen for the American squad following trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. were Trevor Booker of Clemson, Talor Battle of Penn State, Evan Turner of Ohio State, Corey Fisher of Villanova, Lazar Hayward of Marquette, Robbie Hummel of Purdue, James Anderson of Oklahoma State, Craig Brackins of Iowa State, Da’Sean Butler of West Virginia, Quincy Pondexter of Washington and Jarvis Varnado of Mississippi State.
The tournament is next month in Serbia. The American team will be coached by Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan.
U-19 TEAM
Duke guard Seth Curry has made the 12-man roster of the U.S. under-19 men’s team.
Curry was one of 17 players trying out at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The FIBA U19 World Championship will be held July 2-12 in New Zealand.
Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon will lead the team.
Also selected were DeAngelo Casto (Washington State), Ashton Gibbs (Pittsburgh), Gordon Hayward (Butler), Shelvin Mack (Butler), Darius Miller (Kentucky), Arnett Moultrie (UTEP), John Shurna (Northwestern), Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), Howard Thompkins (Georgia), Klay Thompson (Washington State) and Terrico White (Mississippi).
UCLA
LOS ANGELES ó Drew Gordon of UCLA won’t require surgery on the partially torn patellar tendon in his right knee that he injured during tryouts for the U.S. team in the under-19 world basketball championships.
The sophomore forward had an MRI exam Thursday that showed the injury is minor, a team spokesman said.
BYU
PROVO, Utah ó BYU coach Dave Rose has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The university said on its Web site that Rose’s family announced that tests from emergency surgery he had earlier this month to stop internal bleeding were positive for cancer. Rose had his spleen and a portion of his pancreas removed during the surgery.
The BYU coaching staff will handle the daily basketball operations, including summer basketball camps, while Rose undergoes treatment.
