Area sports briefs: Rowan, South returning to action

Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team is scheduled to return to action tonight at Lexington’s Holt-Moffitt Field.
South Rowan returns to action after a long layoff with a road game at Wilkes.
n Kannapolis has announced a special “homecoming game” for June 27 when it plays host to South Rowan at A.L. Brown’s Veterans Field.
All former Kannapolis Legion players in attendance will line the bases, and their names and years played will be announced.
Former players should meet at the pressbox at 6:45 p.m. with athletic director Roger Bigham.
Throwing out the first pitch will be Herman Upright, who was a member of Post 115’s first state championship team in 1946. Kannapolis also won state championships in 1947, 1952 and 1961.

– Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators won 14-4 at West Virginia on Wednesday.
Kannapolis (35-30) took an 8-0 lead by scoring five runs in the first inning and three more in the second. The second and third batters of the game reached on errors, and West Virginia committed five in the game. Only two of the Intimidators’ first nine runs were earned.
Seth Loman, who hit a three-run homer in the eighth, finished with five RBIs and three runs scored. Tyler Kuhn went 4-for-6 and scored twice.
Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer (3-2) allowed three runs and struck out four in eight innings.
Kannapolis matched its season high for runs, and Loman’s homer was his team-leading eighth.
* Albemarle’s Brad Holt, who signed a bonus in excess of $1 million last summer after being drafted out of UNC-Wilmington, is now considered the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization. Holt dominated at Advanced A this season before being promoted to Double-A Binghamton.
– Area golf
Salisbury’s Alex Nianouris won 2 & 1 over Concord’s Thomas Farrell in the first round of match play at the 42nd North Carolina Junior Championship in Henderson.
Nianouris will face Cherryville’s Greg Bunner in the round of 32 today.
* Salisbury’s Lauren Smith (37-39ó76) is tied for 18th entering today’s final round of the 60th North Carolina Women’s Amateur in Wilson.
– Junior Legion
Rowan’s game at Carson was postponed and rescheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.
– Price Hall of Fame
The J.C. Price High School Hall of Fame will hold its fourth annual awards banquet Friday. Ceremonies will take place at the Livingstone Events & Hospitality Center at 701 W. Monroe St.

– North Rowan tennis
There will be an informational meeting in the North Rowan school auditorium today at 5 p.m. for any girls interested in playing tennis this fall.
– NFL signing
The Houston Texans signed former N.C. State tight end Anthony Hill, who was a fourth-round draft pick.
– College hoops
Charlotte basketball coach Bobby Lutz will put his softball experience to use this summer when he works as an analyst for ESPN.
The network said Wednesday that Lutz will serve as a commentator on coverage of the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City from July 16-20.
Lutz is a former ASA slow pitch player and coach and played on national championship teams that were once managed by his father in nearby Denver.
Lutz will enter his 12th season with the 49ers next fall one win shy of 200 career victories. He has also coached at Pfeiffer.
– Baseball camp
The Piedmont Area Baseball Pitchers and Catchers Camp will be held June 29-30 at Central Davidson High. Camp is for ages 5-18. Cost is $60.
Featured instructor is Appalachian State head coach Chris Pollard, plus many more area coaches.

– East hoops camp
Brevard women’s basketball coach Shannon Reid will be holding a camp at East Rowan High School from June 24-25.
The cost is $100 per player. The camp, which is for ninth-12th graders only, will run from 9 a.m. until noon and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. each day.
– Carson volleyball
There will be a volleyball clinic at Carson for grades 6-9 from 5-7 p.m. on June 22. Cost is $10.
There will also be a volleyball 101 offered to parents from 6:45-7:45 for $5 to discuss basics and rules. Show up ready to play.

– South YMCA
The South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through July 18 for its youth baseball league.
The program is for ages 6-12 as of April 30 of this year. The three age divisions are 6-7coach pitch, 8-9 player pitch and 10-12 player pitch (12-year-olds cannot pitch). Games begin Aug. 3.
The cost is $36 for members and $60 for potential members.

The Kannapolis Nationals were the 8-under Mallard Creek “Silver Division” baseball champs.Team members were Jayden Hendley, Gerardo Cardenas, Kade Linton, Austin Lowery, Kyle Critz, Jarrid Nelson, Stevie Quintana, Mitch Farris, Calob Beaver, Chrystian Burleyson, Joel Marburger, Collin Safrit and Matt Moore.
