Area sports briefs: Morris, Cuthbertson in national track event

Salisbury sprinter Romar Morris, a rising junior, and North Rowan jumper Teaunna Cuthbertson, a rising sophomore, will be among the competitors in a national field that will gather for the Nike Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T on June 19-20.
Morris will compete in the 100 and 200 sprints. His best times are 10.8 and 21.85.
Cuthbertson will compete in the triple jump and long jump.
n All-NPC baseball
East Rowan had seven players named to the All-NPC baseball team. West Rowan had four, Carson had three and South Rowan had one.
East placed David Ijames, Noah Holmes, Zach Smith, Preston Troutman, Corbin Shive, Ben DeCelle and Kent Basinger on the team.
West’s All-NPC players were Hernan Bautista, Brantley Horton, Jon Crucitti and Philip Miclat.
Carson placed Tyler Freeze, Julio Zubillaga and Will Misenheimer on the team.
Maverick Miles was South Rowan’s representative.
Lake Norman’s Nick Lomascolo is the NPC Player of the Year. Robert Little, who led the Wildcats to the 3A state title, was named NPC Coach of the Year.

n All-NPC softball
League champion East Rowan placed Chelsea White, Ericka Nesbitt, Kayla Kirk, Lindsay Smith and Haley Barrier on the All-NPC softball team.
West Rowan’s Sabrina Stephens, Ansley Wright and Sarah Perrine made the team, along with Carson’s Chloe Monroe and Lauren Bost and South Rowan’s Desirae Overcash and Kayla Morrow. See Scoreboard.
n Junior Legion
Rowan Junior Legion swept a double header against Statesville at Newman Park on Saturday.
Rowan won the opener 9-5, with Luke Thomas hitting a home run. Thomas, Chris Jacobs and Avery Rogers had two hits each. Curtis Ward was the winning pitcher.
n Andy Austin had four hits as Rowan won the nightcap 10-3.
Thomas and Justin Morris had two hits each. Rogers and Morris turned three 6-4-3 double plays. Matt Miller was the winning pitcher.
Rowan will play Salisbury at Salisbury High’s Robertson Stadium today at 5 p.m.
n Prep football
North Rowan rising junior cornerback Darryl Jackson Jr., 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, did well in the Under Armour Combine at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium.
Scout.com analyst Billy Tucker praised Jackson’s recovery quickness in seven-on-seven competition.
Jackson runs the 40 in 4.5 and has been invited to the Rivals Ultimate 100 Camp that will be held in Atlanta June 20.
There will be more on Jackson next week.
n Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators beat Greensboro 1-0 Saturday on pinch-hitter Jorge Castillo’s sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.
Intimidators starter Charlie Leesman dueled with Greensboro southpaw Brad Hand for seven scoreless frames. Garrett Johnson (3-3) picked up the win by pitching a perfect top of the tenth.
The victory allowed Kannapolis (33-28) to keep pace with first-place Lakewood, which knocked off Lake County. The Intimidators remain 31/2 games back with nine to play before the break.
n Minor leagues
Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) was the starter and loser for Round Rock in a 3-0 Triple-A loss against Albuquerque on Saturday.
Johnson (4-4, 2.87 ERA) pitched six innings and yielded eight hits and three runs for Houston’s top farm team. He allowed Dodgers prospect Mitch Jones’ 21st homer of the season.
n David Thomas (Catawba) had run-scoring singles in each of his first two-at bats for Stockton on Saturday night. Thomas raised his average to .221 with the Ports and delivered his 18th and 19th RBIs.
n Wood bat leagues
Davidson’s Ryan Overcash (NW Cabarrus) is off to a 2-0 start for the Lake Norman Copperheads of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
Overcash had a 1.64 ERA and eight strikeouts in 11 innings. ASU’s Jerod Faggart (NWC) has driven in six runs for the Copperheads.
