Our local farmers market is becoming more interesting and inviting every week. It is amazing to see the array of products displayed. I enjoy strolling through the market to see what is available. My purchases are usually made on the second walk around.
Strawberries are one of my favorite things this time of year. The local growers tell me that there will be only a couple of weeks remaining for strawberries. Enjoy them while you can.
There are several locally grown vegetables that are plentiful at this time: onions, squash, zucchini, cucumbers and cabbage. Unfortunately, the lettuces will only be available for another week or two, as well as sugar peas and cauliflower.
For these and other items visit with Eagle Farms, Correll Farms, Cress Farm and Miller Farm.
Everyone enjoys sweet onions and the onion crop is at its peak. David Correll of Correll Farms provided me with this recipe.
Sweet Onions on the Grill
Sweet onions
Beef buillion
Brown sugar
Butter
Core the center of the onions and fill each with 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of beef bullion and a small pat of butter. Wrap the onions in foil and grill for 20 or 30 minutes until soft.
You may also bake onions in a 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes.
One of the biggest stars of the Farmers Market each summer is corn. Erica Miller of Miller Farms gave me the good news that they will have corn by mid-June.
Can the much loved vine ripened tomatoes be far behind?
In addition to the beautiful plants and produce available, the farmers market will also be providing other attractions in the coming weeks.
– June 6 ó Local artist Sharon Forthofer will demonstrate her talent from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
– June 13 ó Pottery 101 will be displaying their creations.
– June 13 ó A vegetable carving demonstration is scheduled.
– June 20 ó Pottery 101 will make another appearance.
There is still a good selection of vegetable and flower plants available.
If you need some transplants to finish your garden or to fill your containers see Country Garden, Dawn’s Greenhouse, Bluebird Acres or Joyce’s Flowers. These vendors also have some truly beautiful containers that are fully grown and ready for your immediate enjoyment.Baked goods are such a great complement to any meal. Breads, pies, cakes and many other items can be found at The Bread Basket, How Sweet It Is and Posh Pasta and Cakes. Try not to leave the market without some fresh mushrooms from Landis Gourmet Mushrooms or your meat entrée from T and D Charolais and Wild Turkey Farms.
See you at the market!
