The Rowan County American Legion team fell to Caldwell County 5-4 at Newman Park on Sunday night.
Noah Holmes singled to start the ninth inning for Rowan, moved to second on Austin Shull’s sacrifice and advanced to third on Philip Miclat’s flyout.
Pinch-hitter Matt Miller grounded out sharply to third base to end the game. He was out in a close play at first.
Russell Michalec started on the mound for Rowan and took the loss. He worked five innings and allowed four runs. He was followed to the hill by Alex Litaker, Parker Gobbel, Forrest Buchanan and Cody Laws. That quartet held Area IV power Caldwell (3-0) to one run and four hits.
Rowan had eight hits, including a double and a triple by Preston Troutman. Billy Veal tripled for the second straight night. Troutman, Holmes, Ethan Fisher and Corbin Shive knocked in runs for Rowan (3-1) in the non-league game.
Rowan is at home tonight against Lexington. Billy Veal or Corbin Shive will start on the mound.
– Mooresville led 8-7 late, but Concord rallied to beat the Moors 18-9 on Sunday. Aaron Meadows hit a three-run homer for Mooresville.
– Junior Legion
Rowan lost a non-conference game to Western Forsyth 6-5 in nine innings on Sunday. Andy Austin had two hits, including a homer. Chandler Jones also had two hits.
* Carson swept two games from Stanly on Sunday.
Justin Morrison and Mitch Galloway pitched Carson to a 2-1 win in the opener.
Joseph Basinger’s RBI single scored Zach Gragg in the first inning.
Carson scored the deciding run in the third when Tripp Cross walked, stole second and came around on a pair of passed balls.
In the nightcap, Carson pounded Stanly 13-1. Carson scored five in the second and six in the third.
Ethan Free and Caleb Trexler combined on a four-hitter in the five-inning game. Galloway paced the offense with two hits, including a double.
– Intimidators fall
The Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 9-2 Sunday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Delmarva (26-20) racked up 18 hits, the most any team has registered this season against Kannapolis (24-26). Kannapolis committed a season-high four errors.
