East Rowan’s baseball team travels to Southwest Guilford for a third-round game in the 3A playoffs tonight.
East (22-4) has won its last six games but is on the road as a No. 2 seed. Southwest Guilford is a No. 1 seed.
Charlotte signee Corbin Shive (1-1, 1.11 ERA) is the probable starting pitcher for the Mustangs. Shive has been excellent since returning from offseason shoulder surgery.
Red-hot right fielder David Ijames (.429, 9-for-12 in his last four games) paces East’s offense.
East edged Piedmont 5-4 and blew out Winston-Salem Parkland 16-3 in its first two playoff outings.
Ethan Ogburn, a 6-foot-4 N.C. State signee, powers Southwest Guilford (15-10) on the mound and at the plate.
Ogburn has struck out 16 batters in eight innings in the playoffs. He’s pitched in both playoff games, combining with Brock Hudgens for a no-hitter against Hickory Ridge and relieving Hudgens in the fifth inning of a 2-1 victory against Anson on Friday.
– Prep softball
East Rowan (18-2) is home today in the second round of the 3A state playoffs against Eastern Randolph (22-4). West Rowan (8-12) is on the road at T.C. Roberson (25-2).
Pitchers Chelsea White (East) and Sabrina Stephens (West) were outstanding in the first round.
Eastern Randolph sophomore pitcher Dallas Heaton pitched a no-hitter in the first round and has 146 strikeouts in 110 innings.
T.C. Roberson smacked the ball around in an easy first-round win against Kings Mountain. Whitney Wright had a pair of two-run doubles. Kaitlyn Ramsey had two doubles and scored twice.
– American Legion baseball
Brantley Horton got the last six outs and was the winning pitcher as Mooresville won its season opener 12-10 against Cherryville on Thursday.
Horton also had two hits and two RBIs. Dylan West contributed a single, double and triple. Billy Nantz hit a two-run homer.
– College basketball signings
South Rowan’s Hunter Morrison signed with coach Matt Ridge and Davidson County Community College on Thursday night.
The all-conference, all-county point guard averaged 19.2 points for John Davis this past season. A story on Morrison will appear in Monday’s Post.
* Former West Rowan standout Jamel Carpenter, who played the past two seasons at Florida Community College in Jacksonville, has signed with Fayetteville State.

– Stallions in nationals
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions baseball team is currently in Pensacola, Fla., for the national tournament.
They are the North Carolina champions and enter play with a 21-5 record.
The only Rowan County player on the varsity is eighth-grader Coleman Wilson, who was moved up from the middle-school team. Wilson and Bryson Shepard were the lone Rowan players on the middle-school team.
– Intimidators lose
Derek Norris blasted a second-inning home run and the Hagerstown Suns held on for a 4-2 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Norris homered against Dexter Carter to give Hagerstown an early 2-0 lead. The Suns never trailed.
Carter (1-2) gave up four earned runs in his six innings on the mound, although he did fan seven to move back to the top of the SAL leaderboard with 61 strikeouts on the season.
– Hole-in-one at Rolling Hills
Mike Parker recorded a hole-in-one at Rolling Hills on Thursday.
Parker aced the 157-yard No. 10 hole. Witnessing the feat were Ned Harwell and Sam Shaver.
– Middle school baseball
Southeast hasn’t wrapped up the Rowan County championship yet. China Grove (8-3) handed the Patriots their second loss with a 7-4 win on Thursday.
Brian Hallman was the winning pitcher for China Grove. Tyler Fuller had three hits, while Connor Bridges and Eric Tyler had two each. K.J. Pressley was the only player with two hits for the Patriots (11-2, 9-2).
Southeast finishes the regular season Tuesday at Corriher-Lipe.
– West basketball camp
West Rowan boys basketball coach Mike Gurley will hold a camp for players in grades 2-9 from June 15-18 in the West gym.
The camp will be held from 9 a.m. until noon each day. There is a fee of $50. Campers will receive instruction and a free Falcon T-shirt. For more information, contact Gurley at 704-798-2074.
– Carson basketball camp
Carson basketball camp for boys and girls in grades 2-6 will run from 9-noon Monday through Thursday. The gym opens at 8. Those interested should contact coach Brian Perry at 704-855-5039. The cost is $60.
