Salisbury sophomore Steven Page’s individual run ended in the quarterfinal round of the 2A tennis championships.
Page, competing at the Cary Tennis Center on Friday, won 6-0, 6-1 against Ashe County’s Chase Smith in the opening round and lost 6-3, 6-2 to Greg Galush of Cardinal Gibbons. Galush is the No. 4 player on the state’s top-ranked 2A squad.
Page, the Midwest Regional champion, finished the season with a 19-4 singles record.
“For him to be a sophomore and reach the second round of states is exceptional,” Salisbury coach Chris Myers said. “He’s come a long way both physically and mentally. I’m excited about the next few years.”
Page was the No. 1 player for a Salisbury team that earned a share of the CCC title and reached the second round of the 2A playoffs.
The Hornets’ starting lineup ó Page, Austin Flynn, Alan Lebowitz, Seth Gentry, Wes McNeely and Alex Weant ó included no seniors.
“I’ve never had as much fun and been able to work with such a good group of kids as we have out here, all the kids on the team,” Myers said. “That’s been a real pleasure, and the success they’ve had this year has been an extremely pleasant surprise.”
