Gifted readers
Faith Elementary could use “Billy Goats Gruff” and “The Little Mermaid.” Knox Middle would like “David Copperfield” and “The Encyclopedia of World Religions.” North Rowan High needs “Huckleberry Finn” and “Wuthering Heights.”
Those are just a few of the volumes requested by local schools participating in the Rowan-Salisbury Community Bookfair, which is intended to put more books on the shelves of schools and more donations in the hands of Rowan Helping Ministries. The fair operates in conjunction with the distributor Usborne Books. By buying a book requested by a local school, residents can both boost literacy and help RHM, which will receive a percentage of the proceeds. You can look at each local school’s literary wish list” online at www.ReadUsborneBooks.com. (You also can call Tracy Aitken at 704-797-0777 for more information.)
Local officials recently met to brainstorm ideas for boosting reading and literacy among Rowan County residents. Making sure our schools have well-equipped libraries is one step in the process. The book fair is a worthwhile way to help stock shelves at the library ó as well as at Rowan Helping Ministries.
