NEW YORK ó Carlos Delgado hit a three-run homer in a five-run eighth inning and finished with five RBIs, helping the surging New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Friday night for their fifth straight win.
Former East Rowan grad Bobby Parnell (1-0) struck out two in a perfect eighth to earn the win.
Jonathon Niese plugged a hole in New York’s rotation with six effective innings and Carlos Beltran had a tiebreaking RBI single for the Mets, who improved to 3-0 on their eight-game homestand.
Nyjer Morgan had two hits and reached base five times for the slumping Pirates, who have lost six straight and 10 of 11 overall. Pittsburgh also has lost six consecutive road games.
Jose Reyes got the winning rally started with a single to center off Tyler Yates (0-2).
Phillies 10, Braves 6
PHILADELPHIAó Cole Hamels pitched six impressive innings to earn his first win since the World Series, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 10-6 on Friday night.
Jayson Werth, Chris Coste and Chase Utley homered for the NL East leaders, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Making his first start since spraining his left ankle on April 28, Hamels (1-2) allowed two runs, three hits and struck out seven, and lowered his ERA to 6.17.
Astros 2, Padres 0
HOUSTON ó Wandy Rodriguez threw eight sharp innings and Hunter Pence’s two-run single in the fifth inning lifted the Astros over the San Diego Padres.
Reds 6, Cardinals 4
CINCINNATI ó Johnny Cueto extended his scoreless-inning streak to 15 before giving up his only run, and the Cincinnati Reds won their second in a row with a depleted lineup.
Cueto (3-1) had his way with a team that hit him hard during his brief career. He limited the St. Louis Cardinals to a run and five hits in seven innings, leaving with a 6-1 lead. The 23-year-old pitcher has allowed only three earned runs in his last five starts.
Brewers 3, Cubs 2
MILWAUKEE ó Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer in the eighth and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs, who may be without third baseman Aramis Ramirez for an extended period after he dislocated his left shoulder.
AMERICAN LEAGUEBOSTON ó Jason Bay and J.D. Drew homered in Boston’s second straight big sixth inning and the Red Sox stopped the Rays’ three-game winning streak.
One night after the Red Sox equaled a modern major-league record and set an AL mark with 12 runs against Cleveland before making an out in an inning, five batters scored before the first out was recorded in the sixth. The damage all came against James Shields (3-3).
The Red Sox improved to 17-5 in their last 22 games.Brad Penny (3-1) faced Shields for the second time in six days. He allowed three runs in his first four innings and left with runners at first and second with one out in the seventh. Hideki Okajima then retired Carl Crawford on a fly out and struck out Evan Longoria.
Twins 11, Mariners 0
MINNEAPOLIS ó Scott Baker pitched seven shutout innings for his long-awaited first victory of the season, and the light-hitting Twins broke the game open with three homers in the fifth inning to hand the Mariners their fifth straight loss.
Baker (1-4) gave up five hits and struck out five for Minnesota.
Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau and Brian Buscher gave the Twins their first three-homer inning in nearly seven years, and Brendan Harris also went deep as the Twins snapped a three-game skid.
Rangers 6, White Sox 0
CHICAGO ó Matt Harrison threw a four-hitter in his second career shutout for Texas.
Ian Kinsler and Omar Vizquel each drove in two runs, and David Murphy scored three runs for the Rangers, who have won six of seven.
Harrison (3-2) hasn’t allowed a run in 19 straight innings. He didn’t allow a runner passed second base and only allowed one walk while striking out five.

CLEVELAND ó Justin Verlander struck out 11 and outpitched reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Lee for the second time in a week for the Tigers.
Curtis Granderson made a leaping catch at the wall with a runner on first in the ninth to preserve the win for the Tigers.
