Area briefs: Prep baseball: West Rowan 11, NW Cabarrus 5

Senior catcher Hernan Bautista stayed hot for West Rowan and sparked an 11-5 NPC victory at Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
Bautista hit two homers, delivered a double and knocked in four runs. He leads Rowan batters in homers (eight) and RBIs (25).
Bautista had a run-scoring double in the first inning against Northwest starter Graham Lawing, and West jumped to a 3-0 lead.
Jonathon Wallace capped a five-run first for Northwest with a grand slam against West starter Garrett White, but White held the Trojans down in the second and third innings. D.J. Webb (4-1) relieved in the fourth and shut down the Trojans the rest of the way.
Bautista hit a solo homer in the fifth and unloaded a tape-measure, two-run shot in the sixth that went over the road beyond the outfield fence.
Tyler King, Hayden Untz, Philip Miclat, Jon Crucitti and Dylan Andrews had two hits each for West (13-8, 10-5).
West inched ahead of Carson in the battle for fourth. Northwest (10-11, 6-9) is clinging to the sixth and final playoff berth.

West Rowan bounced back from tough losses against Lake Norman and Northwest Cabarrus to overpower South Rowan 9-0 on Monday.
Autumn Foster and Claire Kistler had big games on Senior Night, while Brittany Gibbons scored four goals.
Allison Baucom scored twice. Abbie Wilson, Allison Parker and Nicole Lucente scored a goal apiece.
Baucom had four assists, Kistler two and Lucente and Allison Bailey one each.
West (10-7) plays at Mooresville on Wednesday.
* Salisbury celebrated Senior Night with a 10-0 CCC victory against North Rowan. Honored were Laurel Loeblein, Emily Dean, Nora Zenudo and Allison Lee. The senior class finished with a 60-19-7 mark.
Madison Kennedy had three assists for the Hornets (11-5-1, 10-3). Katherine Heidt, Taylor Downs, Lee, Marlee Murphy, Jenna Bryan and Karen Presnell had one assist each.
Joy Loeblein scored her first career goal, and Alee Johnson had her first goal of the season. Laurel Loeblein scored two goals. Heidt, Kennedy, Lee, Downs and Zanudo also scored.

Gray Stone shot 303 and finished second by one stroke to Bishop McGuinness in the 1A Midwest Regional at Piney Point in Norwood on Monday.
Leading the Knights were medalist Erik Benson (72), Chad Blankenbeker (74) and Andrew Parks (78).
The Knights qualified for next Monday’s state championships.
– College golf
Catawba junior Kelsey Babos is tied for fifth after two rounds of the Division II Southeast Region women’s golf tournament.
Babos shot 73 on Monday. The final round is today.
– Minor leagues
Pitcher Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) was honored as the Player of the Month for the Round Rock Express, Houston’s Triple-A farm team. Johnson is 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA.
* Kannapolis Intimidators starter Daniel Hudson was named SAL Pitcher of the Week. He moved up to Winston-Salem on Monday.
