The Concert Choir performs this Friday in the sanctuary of St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Salisbury. The concert is free and begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Concert Choir is a diverse group from Rowan County with musicians from high school age through retirees, and is directed by Dean Orbison.
The concert is titled “A Study in Languages.” It is a musical journey around the world. Some of the pieces being performed include “Tunggare” (Australia), “Dirait-on” (France), “Boboroditse Devo” (Russia) and “Sorída” (Zimbabwe).
Closer to home are the works “Jabberwocky” by Rene Clausen and Randall Thompson’s “The Road Not Taken.”
Sculpture Works
Gallery 122 at EastSquare ArtWorks is presenting smaller scale works by the sculptors whose work is currently featured in the downtown Salisbury Sculpture show in various locations around town.
A reception will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at EastSquare, 122 E. Innes St.
Participating sculptors are Katherine Apple, Michael Baker, Carl Billingsley, Kevin Eichner, Jim Gallucci, Don Green, Roger Martin, Dale McEntire, Harry McDaniel, Ray Moose, Josef Vercauteren, Martin Webster and Robert Winkler.

Of Mice and Men
ALBEMARLE ó This is the final weekend for Uwharrie Players’ production of John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center in Albemarle.
The remaining shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Salisbury’s Craig Kolkebeck is directing the production.
Adult tickets are $15; senior citizens and students $12.

Summer stringsThe Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society and Akzo Nobel will sponsor the annual Summer Strings Camp, June 22-26.
The camp offers class instruction for violin, viola, cello and bass for students 8 and up. Camp fee is $100. Scholarships are available.
There will be classes for both beginners and advanced students. Campers will need to bring a bag lunch. Supervised recreation and refreshments will also be offered.
Campers will give a performance on the final day of camp.
The camp will be held in the Music Department of St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 200 W. Innes St. in downtown Salisbury. Camp will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
The camp is staffed by instructors who are professional performers and educators.

Lee Street Theatre will be holding auditions for “Six in the City” 7 p.m. May 4-5 at the Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St.
“Six in the City” will consist of six original 10-minute plays. The production will be directed by Missy Barnes, professor of theater at Catawba College. Production dates are June 3-6.
There are six male speaking roles, ages 20s through 50s, and one non-speaking role, and seven female speaking roles ages 20s through late 50s or early 60s.
The plays were selected through a competition open to playwrights in North and South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. The plays were selected by Barnes and Bethany Sinnot, who is also a professor at Catawba, without knowing the identity of the playwrights during the selection process.The winners were:
“The Caller on the Line” by Steven Gallagher, “Almost Made in Heaven” by Lisa Burdick, “The Stairs” by Jennifer Hubbard, all of North Carolina; “In Your Hands” by Carol Butler of South Carolina; “Speed Bumps” by Brett Hursey of Virginia; “But I’m French” by Terry Rouche of South Carolina.

Thresher Pageant
DENTON ó The Southeast Old Threshers Reunion is giving away a $2,000 scholarship to the winner of the 2009 Southeast Thresher’s Queen Scholarship Pageant.
The Southeast Old Thresher’s Reunion, the largest antique farm equipment and steam engine show in the Southeast, will be held June 30-July 4 at the Denton FarmPark in Denton. The pageant will be held on June 27 in the outdoor amphitheater at the FarmPark.
Girls up to age 24 may participate. They must be single, never have had a child or been married. The winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a host of prizes. Second- and third-place finishers will receive scholarships of $450 and $350, respectively. Additional awards will be given in four categories: Best Interview, Best “Country Cutie” Outfit, Best Casual Outfit and Most Photogenic.
Entry fee is $50. The application deadline is June 13.
