WINSTON-SALEM ó Wake Forest sophomore guard Jeff Teague declared for the NBA draft Wednesday but did not hire an agent, leaving his coach confident he’ll return to school.
Teague averaged a team-best 18.8 points and dished out 110 assists for the Demon Deacons this past season. He’s scored 1,000 points in his two-year career.Teague will be able to attend pre-draft workouts with NBA teams. By not signing with an agent, he’ll have until June 15 to withdraw from the draft, which is June 25.
“This will be a chance for Jeff to be evaluated by the NBA scouts and general managers and to get feedback on his strengths and weaknesses,” Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said in a statement. “I am optimistic that Jeff will be back at Wake Forest next year and that he will have a good idea of the type of junior season he needs to have in order to ensure a solid professional career.”
Teague, named to the All-America second team by the Sporting News and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, is one of three Wake Forest underclassmen contemplating jumping to the NBA.
Sophomore James Johnson told his hometown newspaper, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle, that he was entering the draft and hiring an agent, but a school spokesman could not confirm the move.
Freshman Al-Farouq Aminu has yet to announce his intentions.
