Area briefs: North’s Cuthbertson MVP in Blue Devil Invitational

North Rowan freshman Teaunna Cuthbertson was named the most outstanding field performer at Saturday’s second annual Blue Devil Invitational at Mooresville.
Cuthbertson won the long jump and placed third in the triple jump.
Results were not available at press time, but the performances of local athletes will be listed when available.
n College baseballBelmont’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) was 4-for-9 with seven RBIs as the Bruins swept a high-scoring baseball doubleheader from Jacksonville Saturday.
Wagner hit his sixth and seventh homers of the season in the second game. Wagner is batting .347 with 38 RBIs and is 12-for-13 on steal attempts.
A draft-eligible junior, Wagner was rated the 22nd-best prospect in the Coastal Plain League last summer. The left-handed hitting second baseman is rated as a plus-runner and may hear his name called as the draft rolls along in June.
n South Rowan products Caleb Shore and Patrick Atwell combined for five RBIs while sharing right-field duties in Belmont Abbey’s 23-1 win against St. Andrews Saturday.
Atwell is a senior while Shore is a freshman.
n Lenoir-Rhyne’s Zach Glass (Salisbury) hit two doubles against Mars Hill’s Alex Britt (Salisbury) Saturday and knocked in three runs.
Mars Hill swept the doubleheader. Britt started and was knocked out in the fourth after allowing seven hits and one earned run.
The Lions won both games.
n South Carolina’s Whit Merrifield (Davie) homered in a 6-4 loss against Arkansas on Friday.
Merrifield stole two bases, his ninth and 10th of the season, as the Gamecocks pounded the Razorbacks 9-1 Saturday.
n Lander’s Billy Veal (North Rowan) tossed a scoreless inning in a 4-2 victory against Columbus State Saturday.
n Charlotte’s Rob Lyerly had six RBIs in a doubleheader loss to Duquesne Saturday. Lyerly’s father, Robert, played at East Rowan and Pfeiffer.
n Cusack: All-American
Davie wrestler Matt Cusack became an All American at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals held April 1-3 at Virginia Beach. There were 49 states represented .
Cusack went 6-1 and finished third.
n Prep softball
Kathryn Beaver drove in Marissa Sellers and Heather Yount in the bottom of the fourth inning as Carson beat South Rowan 3-1 Friday.
Sarah Marshall had several key defensive plays for the Cougars. Megan Meismer was the winning pitcher.
n Taylor Beam struck out 10 and pitched a four-hitter to lead Northwest Cabarrus to a 6-0 victory against Mooresville.
Alex Yohe had three hits for the first-place Trojans.
Hope Smith had two hits, including a triple, for the Blue Devils.
n Sara Tuttle hit a grand slam in A.L. Brown’s 14-4 victory against Salisbury.
n Prep tennis
Salisbury’s boys are ranked fifth in the latest 2A poll.
n Prep baseball
West Rowan will play three games in a high-powered tournament at Wilmington Ashley Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
n Salisbury is making up a CCC game against Providence Grove at 4:30 Monday afternoon.
n The Cliff Peeler Easter Baseball Tournament starts at Salisbury Friday. There will be four games Friday, four Saturday and two Monday.
East Rowan is back in the tournament this year after a one-year hiatus.
n Jordan Hudson pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11 as West Davidson routed East Davidson 13-0 in a battle for first place in the CCC Saturday.
Hudson, Alex Grubb and Zach Burkhart had two hits each for the Green Dragons (10-2, 5-0).
n The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions swept a doubleheader from Anderson, S.C., 8-2 and 9-1.
C.J. Harris had two hits for the Stallions in the opener. Kyle Kiker, Bobby Zimmerman and Josh Tossas had two RBIs each. Christian Hicks was the winning pitcher and struck out five.
n The Stallions (9-1) also rolled in the nightcap. Zimmerman and Stephen Shue had three hits each. Shue knocked in four runs.
Hicks, Benji Jackson and Daniel Newton had two hits apiece.
Kiker was the winning pitcher. He fanned five in five innings.
n College softball
Catawba split with Newberry, winning 7-5 and losing 8-0.
Ryann Baker hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer for Catawba (17-15, 4-4) in the first game. Chelsea Wallace (6-2) weathered early trouble and went the distance on the mound.
Amanda Huckestein pitched a two-hitter for Newberry (24-9, 5-1) in the nightcap.
Carly Sabat and Cassie Markham both went 3-for-6 for Catawba in the doubleheader.
n Devon Williams had a hit and scored a run as Maryland swept an ACC doubleheader from Virginia Saturday.
n Gina Loflin (West) had a hit for Walters State in a 1-0 victory against Dyersburg State Saturday.
n Lindsey Barrier (East Rowan) had two hits and scored twice for Mars Hill in a SAC doubleheader sweep of Brevard Saturday.
n College track
N.C. State’s Jason Jones (East Rowan) was second in the shot put at Saturday’s Duke Invitational with an effort of 53 feet, 81/2 inches.
Jones was ninth in the hammer throw.
n UNC Asheville’s Dane Corriher (South Rowan) was 14th in the 400 at Duke in 50.17 seconds.
n Charlotte’s Makenzie Mullinax (South) tied for 16th in the pole vault.
n College tennis
Mars Hill’s men rolled to a 9-0 win over over visiting Catawba Saturday.
Mars Hill (6-3, 4-1) won two singles matches in super tiebreakers.
Catawba (9-8, 0-4) dropped No. 1 doubles 9-8.
n Mars Hill’s women topped Catawba 5-4.
The Lions (4-6, 2-3) took a tight match at No. 5 singles to win it.
Catawba (8-8, 0-4) got singles wins from Steffi Cook and Nikiah Knox.
n Rowan Alliance soccer
The FCCA Rowan Alliance U13 boys soccer team finished its season with a 6-3-1 record.
Rowan won 5-2 against South Charlotte Soccer Association Silver Friday.
Carlos Zanudo had two goals, while Bobby Cardelle, John Canipe and Clint Comadoll had one each.
Assists were credited to Comadoll, Zanudo and Zack Sukkasem.
n On Saturday, Rowan tied 2-2 with Charlotte United Steel (tied for first place in the II Southwest division.)
In the last 30 seconds, Comadoll scored the tying goal with a header on a rebounded ball off the post.
Additional team members are goalie Banks Fisher, Garret Owens, Philip Simons, Lucas Capito, Sam Cooley, Ian Lins, Angel Domiguez, Sean Mahaffey, Nick Greene, Colt Sherrill and Ashlyn Heidt.
The team is coached by Frank Cardelle and Dr. Yut Sukkasem.
n Youth track
Local runners Marianne and René Abdalah competed in the AAU track meet at Charlotte Harding Saturday.
Marianne, 9, won the 1600 and 800 (2:49) with personal bests.
René, her 7-year-old brother, was second in the 800 in a PB of 3:07.
n Prep track
A.L. Brown’s boys scored 112 points and won a recent SPC meet against Hickory Ridge, Porter Ridge. Piedmont, Parkwood and Concord.
Jerrod Lipscomb won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Tavis Bailey took the discus, while Dillon Robinson won the 100 for the Wonders.
