Area sports briefs: Parnell sharp vs. Tigers

Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was clocked at 99 mph in Wednesday’s relief outing. Parnell pitched a scoreless seventh in the Mets’ 10-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers.n Herd baseball
The Carolina Herd 9-under baseball team from Salisbury had a 7-1 record and won two tournaments over the weekend, including the Top Gun NIT in Concord.
The Herd won the championship of the Gold Bracket by beating the Clemmons Cougars 9-6.
Trevor Scruggs was the winning pitcher. Hayden Setzer pitched two shutout innings for the save, and Bryson Sprinkle led the offense with three RBIs.
The Herd also defeated the Shelby Dragons 6-2 and the Elon Lil’ Phoenix 15-7.
Other Herd players include Will Brown, Solomon Holshouser, John Owen, Cameron Prugh, Chandler Lippard, Cole Perry, Griffin Myers and Peyton Lambert.
The Herd is coached by Mark Lambert, John Myers and Dave Prugh.
n Prep track
In boys track at Mooresville on Tuesday, the Blue Devils won with 93 points. They were followed by East Rowan (83.5), Northwest Cabarrus (70.5) and West Rowan (22).
Daishion Barger won three events for East, taking the 100 (10.92 seconds), the 110 hurdles (14.34) and 200 (22.23). Nathan Robbins won the shot (45 feet, 3 inches). Keith Leonard won the pole vault (14-6).
Finishing second for the Mustangs were Chris Demitrazsek (shot, 42-61/2), Landon Beattie (800, 2:14), Cole Honeycutt 3200 (10:57) and Evan Webb (pole vault, 12-0).
East’s 4×800 relay team of Justin Holshouser, Eli Walton, J Michael Shuping and Honeycutt ran 8:55 for second.
East’s 4×100 relay team of John Owen, Leonard, Luke Wilkinson and Ben Hancock ran 45.63 for second.
East’s 4×400 relay team of Evan Hiatt, Holshouser, Joseph Furtado and Hancock ran 3:40 for second place.
West Rowan’s Tim Flanagan won the long jump (20-5).
n Northwest (106.5) won the girls meet.
Mooresville (83), East Rowan (46) and West Rowan followed (35.5).
West’s Leslie Pence won the 1600 (5:48.50) and the 800 (2:39.2), and the Falcons won the 4×100 relay.
East winners were Ashley Collins in the shot (31-4) and Summer Taylor in the long jump (16-1).
Northwest Cabarrus’ Sushanie Blake won the 100 (12.16), 400 (1:02) and 20 (25.51). Maklisha Ford won the 100 hurdles (15.16) and Triple jump (34-7).
n Prep baseball
West Rowan’s game with Statesville scheduled for Wednesday was pushed back to April 13 as a jayvee-varsity doubleheader at West.
The schools will clash at Statesville April 28.
n College baseball
N.C. State’s Wade Moore (West Rowan) keyed a 4-3 victory against UNC Greensboro Tuesday with three RBIs and three stolen bases. Moore had two hits and scored twice.
Moore had two hits in Wednesday’s 17-5 loss to Liberty.
n A pair of former South Rowan players are manning right field for Belmont Abbey. Patrick Atwell had three hits in Sunday’s 4-1 win against Anderson. Caleb Shore scored three runs in Tuesday’s 8-2 win against Augusta State.
n Pfeiffer moved up to No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.
n Wednesday’s Catawba-North Greenville game was rescheduled for April 20.
n College tennis
Pfeiffer’s men rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit and defeated Catawba 5-4 Tuesday.
Catawba matches scheduled for Wednesday and today were postponed.
n Catawba golf
Catawba sophomore John O’Planick earned medalist honors at the recent Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge.
O’Planick was one of three players that finished at 1-over 73. Tusculum shot 307 and edged Brevard and Newberry by a shot for the team title. Catawba shot 315.
n College soccer
Elijah Denton was named Pfeiffer women’s soccer coach.
n College lacrosse
Catawba’s Braden Artem is Deep South Conference Freshman of the Week.
n Overseas hoops
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 22 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out of his game in Italy over the weekend.
n Carlos Dixon (South Rowan) scored 16 points for his team in Argentina Friday and has averaged 13.1 points in 38 games.
n Prep sports
While Barclay Marsh stepped down as Mooresville head football coach, he will remain as athletics director.
The Blue Devils move to the 4A ranks this fall.
n Jared Eure was fired as West Forsyth’s girls basketball coach after two seasons and a 14-34 mark.
n Former Central Davidson head football coach Eugene Everhart, fired after last season, has been named as athletics director and head football coach at Wheatmore, a new school opening in Randolph County this fall.
n Church golf league
The organizational meeting for the upcoming Rowan County Church Golf League will be held Tuesday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the McCanless clubhouse.
The meeting will serve to discuss changes for the upcoming season and nominate charities the league will benefit.
The league raised $1,542 for the Hospice of Rowan County and Nazareth Children’s Home last year.

n Celebrity softball
Rowan Seniors will take on NFL celebrities as part of the Senior Games.
The game is set for Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium at 1:30 p.m. on April 4.
Ex-NFL stars will include Tommy Barnhardt, Lance Smith and Ben Coates.
The cost is $5 for adults. Children under 12 are admitted free.
n Intimidators ready
The Kannapolis Intimidators open the South Atlantic League season April 9 against Asheville.
Twenty-three fireworks days are planned at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium for Fridays and Saturday.
All 10 Thursday games will be Thirsty Thursdays.
Every Tuesday will be a Bi-Lo’s Two-For-Tuesday. Tickets will be buy-one-get-one-free, and there will be two-for-one food specials. Every Tuesday will also be Senior Day with Baseball Bingo.
Other special nights will include the Intimidators 15th Anniversary Celebration and Kannapolis Heritage Night (May 16) and Back to School Night (Aug. 28).

A special “unveiling” is planned for opening night.
n RAC swimming
Rowan Aquatic Club swimmers Kayla Tennant (9), Michael Mebel (12), Brandon Ralston (12) and Taylor Rodenhuis (12) qualified for the Southern Zone Eastern Section Age Group Championships in Charlotte. There were 860 athletes competing.
Mebel’s best finish was 12th in the 1650 freestyle (19:02.84). Ralston was 20th in the 50 backstroke (30.66).
Rodenhuis was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:01.15) and 1650 free (18:24.16). He was ninth in the 400 IM (4:46.76) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:03.46).
Tennant’s highest finished was 47th in the 50 butterfly (34.42).
n 5K race
The 5th Annual Beach Blast 5K will be the Road Runners Club of America North Carolina State Championship 5K Race.
The race, which attracted 226 runners last year, will be held May at 8 a.m. in downtown Albemarle.
