Area sports briefs: Mustangs rally

East Rowan fell behind 6-0 before rallying to beat North Iredell 8-6 at Staton Field to headline Tuesday’s baseball action.
The catalyst for the NPC comeback was Preston Troutman’s two-out RBI single in the third that got the Mustangs on the board.
Down 6-3 in the fourth, Ethan Fisher and Robbie Ijames got on base and Austin Shull, Casey Little and Troutman knocked in runs to tie it.
Corbin Shive’s triple and Ijames’ two-out hit in the fifth finally put East in front.
Parker Gobbel was the winning pitcher in relief of Kent Basinger. Gobbel allowed one run in four innings. Troutman worked the seventh for a save.
“Wish we’d done better, but we did come back,” East coach Brian Hightower said. “Troutman was huge for us.”
* Catawba-bound lefty Nick Lomascolo shut down West Rowan except for a Brett Huffman homer, and Lake Norman jumped on reeling West Rowan 8-3.
D.J. Webb took the loss for West, which fell to 0-6, and more importantly, 0-3 in the NPC. Eric Manser had three hits for the Wildcats.
* South Rowan lost at Mooresville 5-2 in NPC play. The Raiders got a complete game on the hill from Dylan Walker, but the Blue Devils took advantage of mistakes and scored five unearned runs.
South had only three hits against Mooresville hurlers Ian Walters and Wes Dumford. Jacob Dietz had a two-run single in the fourth off the third-base bag that produced both South runs.
Aaron Meadows had three hits for the Blue Devils.
“We battled,” South Rowan coach Thad Chrismon said. “We’re close.”
* West Davidson overpowered Salisbury 13-1 in a CCC game. John Knox scored Salisbury’s run on an error.
West Davidson pounded four homers, with Jake Everhart and Jon Jarvis hitting solos, Zach Burkhart belting a three-run shot, and Alex Grubb hitting a grand slam.
“Sometimes you’re the hammer; sometimes you’re the nail,” SHS coach Scott Maddox said. “West Davidson is a senior-laden team, and tonight it was men against boys. We won’t hang our heads. We’ll keep working to get the results that we want.”
* North Rowan got its bats going but dropped a 9-7 CCC slugfest with East Davidson. Travis Honeycutt hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Cavaliers, North’s first homer this season.
Trailing 9-3 in the sixth, Kyle Munday hit a solo homer for the Cavaliers, and Dakota Brown capped a four-run frame with a bases-clearing double.
Patrick Snider took the loss on the mound.
Jesse Cooper had a career night for the Golden Eagles, belting two homers and knocking in five runs.
* A.L. Brown let a game it should have had slip away when it fell to SPC foe Hickory Ridge 8-7 in eight innings.
“We had it put away three times,” Brown coach Empsy Thompson said.
John Tuttle threw six innings for the Wonders. Justin Kidd and Dylan May relieved, with May taking a hard-luck loss in the eighth.
Zach Wright and Quin Gill had key hits for the Wonders, but their defense let them down late in the game.
* The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions thumped Forsyth Home Education 7-1. Kyle Kiker was the winning pitcher. He fanned eight in five innings.
Kiker, Benji Jackson and Stephen Shue had two hits each for the Stallions (6-1).
* Nick Musgrave pitched a shutout for Central Davidson (6-1, 2-1) in a 2-0 CCC win against Ledford.
– Jayvee baseball
Someone call the Guinness Book of World Records.
East Rowan’s Jamey Blalock had three hits ó in one inning ó in Tuesday’s 35-1 romp over North Iredell.
* North Rowan (3-0 CCC) beat East Davidson 10-7. Dusty Agner had two hits and five RBIs and was the winning pitcher. Jamone Kelly had three hits.
Tyler Pedley hit two homers for East Davidson.
– Prep softball
Kayla Morrow homered and knocked in all five runs as South Rowan beat Mooresville 5-4 in NPC play on Tuesday.
Morrow had three hits, including a two-run homer. Desirae Overcash pitched the last four innings.
Kayla Corriher had two hits for the Raiders.
Hope Smith had three hits for the Blue Devils.
* In other NPC games, Lake Norman beat West Rowan 8-0; East Rowan beat North Iredell 4-0; and West Iredell outscored Statesville 10-6.
* Davie’s Samantha Tarleton held Forbush to four hits, and Morgan Wyatt hit a solo home run for a 1-0 victory. Wyatt had Davie’s only two hits.
– College baseball
Catawba rallied to beat Mount Olive 13-5 and 8-7 in Tuesday’s doubleheader at Newman Park.
The Indians (16-9) scored nine runs in the third inning of the opener to wipe out a 5-0 deficit.
Catawba sent 14 men to the plate in the inning and was aided by four Mount Olive errors in. Brett Hatley ) doubled home two runs. Corey Parker gave Catawba the lead with a single.
Josh Hohn added a two-run double. Wil Huneycutt was the winning pitcher in relief.
* Chris Ahearn brought home the winning run in the seventh of the nightcap when his hard grounder to short was misplayed. Jake Faggart kept the inning alive, beating out an infield single on a bang-bang play at first with two outs. A grounder to third by Parker was thrown away at first and Zeb Link delivered the tying run with a single.
Ryan Query had a two-run homer for the Indians, and Kevin McMillan had a solo shot.
* Wilkes Community College swept Surry 8-1 and 3-1 on Tuesday to improve to 19-4. Jason Ridenhour (North Rowan) pitched a gem for the Cougars.
– Catawba softball
Catawba split with Georgia College and State University Tuesday at Whitley Field, winning 4-3 and losing 8-5.
Catawba (15-11) won the opener on Brittany Thornburg’s two-run single in the fifth.
Allie Marshall homered. Chelsea Wallace was the winning pitcher.
* Callie Gordy had a two-run double, while Kathryn Geouge had a two-run triple in the second game.
– Prep golf
Salisbury shot 153 and won a CCC match at Sandy Creek Monday.
Roy Dixon’s 36 led the Hornets. Clark Alcorn, Troy Beaver and Alex Lee shot 39s. Randy Almeida shot 41.
Ledford (159) was second. The Hornets took a three-shot lead over the Panthers in the season standings.
Other scores: Central Davidson 164; West Davidson 177; East Davidson 178; North Rowan 190; Providence Grove 196; Lexington 239.
West Davidson’s Justin Clement shot 33 for medalist honors.
Miller Sokolowski led North with a 44. Also competing for the Cavaliers were Bill Fordyce (47), Jon Robertson (49), Kyle Collins (50) and Jesse Pinkston (56).
– Prep tennis
West Rowan stayed unbeaten with a 7-2 NPC win over Northwest Cabarrus Tuesday afternoon.
It was a key win for the Falcons, who lost to Northwest 7-2 last season.

– 7th-grade hoops tourney
North Rowan and West Rowan shared the boys regular-season championship and split meetings. They’ll settle who’s best tonight at 6 p.m. at Corriher-Lipe in the tournament championship game.
Top-seeded North (12-1) defeated No. 5 China Grove 60-23 in a Tuesday semifinal. The Mavericks led 39-16 at halftime. Jaquan Boyd led the Mavericks with 14 points, while Michael Bowman scored 11. Cameron Sifford and Michael Bost added eight and seven points, respectively. Antoine Payne and Tyler Mulkey had six points apiece. Michael Connor scored five.
China Grove (4-11) was led by Shawn Spry with nine points.
No. 2 West Rowan (13-1) finished strong for a 43-35 victory over No. 3 Southeast.
Southeast’s Patriots (9-5) were tied at 24-all after three quarters.
Devin Parks finished with a game-high 16 points, seven down the stretch. Daisean Reddick and Malik Crudup had nine points each.
West’s Bulldogs made 13 of 14 free throws in the last period.
Southeast was led by Colton Laws with 15 points and three 3s. John Patella and Myquon Stout had six points apiece.
The top-seeded Erwin girls (14-0) and No. 2 Knox (12-2) meet for the girls tourney title at 4:30 p.m. today.
– Prep sports
While Barclay Marsh stepped down as Mooresville head football coach, he will remain as athletics director.
The Blue Devils move to the 4A ranks this fall.
* Jared Eure was fired as West Forsyth’s girls basketball coach after two seasons and a 14-34 mark.
* Former Central Davidson head football coach Eugene Everhart, fired after last season, has been named as athletics director and head football coach at Wheatmore, a new school opening in Randolph County this fall.
– Celebrity softball
Rowan Seniors will take on NFL celebrities as part of the Senior Games.
The game is set for Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium at 1:30 p.m. on April 4.
Ex-NFL stars will include Tommy Barnhardt, Lance Smith and Ben Coates.
The cost is $5 for adults. Children under 12 are admitted free.
– Intimidators ready
The Kannapolis Intimidators open the South Atlantic League season April 9 against Asheville.
Twenty-three fireworks days are planned at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium for Fridays and Saturday.
All 10 Thursday games will be Thirsty Thursdays.
Every Tuesday will be a Bi-Lo’s Two-For-Tuesday. Tickets will be buy-one-get-one-free, and there will be two-for-one food specials. Every Tuesday will also be Senior Day with Baseball Bingo.
Other special nights will include the Intimidators 15th Anniversary Celebration and Kannapolis Heritage Night (May 16) and Back to School Night (Aug. 28).

– College lacrosse
Catawba’s Braden Artem was honored as Deep South Conference Freshman of the Week. Artem had four goals and two assists in a win against St. Andrews.
– Catawba golf
Catawba sophomore John O’Planick earned medalist honors at the recent Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge.
The course is the site of the 2009 SAC Championships and was a tune-up for Catawba, Brevard, Tusculum and Newberry.
O’Planick was one of three players that finished at 1-over 73 and shared honors with Brevard’s Grant Carnie and Tom Rennie. Tusculum edged Brevard and Newberry by a shot for the team title. The Pioneers had a 307 total. Catawba had a score of 315.
– Overseas pro basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 22 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out of his game in Italy over the weekend.
n Carlos Dixon (South Rowan) scored 16 points for his team in Argentina Friday and has averaged 13.1 points in 38 games.
– Church golf league
The organizational meeting for the upcoming Rowan County Church Golf League will be held Tuesday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the McCanless clubhouse.
The meeting will serve to discuss changes for the upcoming season and nominate charities the league will benefit.
The league raised $1,542 for the Hospice of Rowan County and Nazareth Children’s Home last year.

– Carolina Herd baseball
The Carolina Herd 9-under baseball team from Salisbury had a 7-1 record and won two tournaments over the weekend, including the Top Gun NIT in Concord.
The Herd won the championship of the Gold Bracket by beating the Clemmons Cougars 9-6.
Trevor Scruggs was the winning pitcher. Hayden Setzer pitched two shutout innings for the save, and Bryson Sprinkle led the offense with three RBIs.
The Herd also defeated the Shelby Dragons 6-2 and the Elon Lil’ Phoenix 15-7.
Other Herd players include Will Brown, Solomon Holshouser, John Owen, Cameron Prugh, Chandler Lippard, Cole Perry, Griffin Myers and Peyton Lambert.
The Herd is coached by Mark Lambert, John Myers and Dave Prugh.
– RAC swimming
Rowan Aquatic Club swimmers Kayla Tennant (9), Michael Mebel (12), Brandon Ralston (12) and Taylor Rodenhuis (12) qualified for the Southern Zone Eastern Section Age Group Championships in Charlotte. There were 860 athletes competing.
Mebel’s best finish was 12th in the 1650 freestyle (19:02.84). Ralston was 20th in the 50 backstroke (30.66).
Rodenhuis was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:01.15) and 1650 free (18:24.16). He was ninth in the 400 IM (4:46.76) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:03.46).
Tennant’s highest finished was 47th in the 50 butterfly (34.42).
– L-R coach honored
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association selected Todd Starkey of Lenoir-Rhyne as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Coach of the Year.
