Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) allowed five hits, but no walks or runs, as the New York Mets beat Baltimore 4-0 on Friday. Parnell pitched 22/3 innings and struck out two.
n College baseball
Trey Holmes (East Rowan) was 8-for-15 as 23rd-ranked Pitt Community College took four games from Blue Ridge CC over the weekend. Holmes had two doubles and six RBIs.
Holmes will still be eligible to play American Legion ball this summer and plans to return to the Rowan County team.
n Alex Britt (Salisbury) pitched a complete game for Mars Hill in a 7-2 victory against Newberry on Sunday. Britt (4-2) walked two, struck out two and scattered seven hits.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan) hit a home run as N.C. State beat Wake Forest 10-3 on Saturday. Moore hit his fourth homer of the season Sunday and had three RBIs as the Wolfpack beat the Demon Deacons 13-7.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had three hits and three RBIs for Belmont in an 8-5 win at North Florida Friday.
n Whit Merrifield (Davie) hit a home run for South Carolina in Friday’s 7-3 win against LSU.
n Zach Glass (Salisbury) had two RBIs in Lenoir-Rhyne’s sweep of Brevard on Saturday and went 2-for-5 in a 12-3 win against the Tornados Sunday.
n UNC’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) had two hits in a 5-4 loss against Duke Saturday. Seager had two more hits in a 10-9 loss to the Blue Devils Sunday and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
n Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) homered for Appalachian State in a 3-1 victory against Georgia Southern on Sunday.
nRyan Bostian (South) walked and scored the tying run in the last inning as Montreat, ranked 20th in NAIA, rallied to beat Virginia-Wise Friday.
n Pfeiffer’s Jonathan McDaniel (Davie) pitched a complete game in a 2-1 victory against Coker that gave the Falcons a doubleheader split.
McDaniel struck out 10.
n Zack Pou had four hits as Pfeiffer beat Coker 14-7 Sunday.
n Lander’s Billy Veal (North Rowan) retired two batters in a seventh-inning relief appearance in Sunday’s 8-0 victory against Augusta State.
n Aubrey Meadows (Mooresville) made his college debut out of the bullpen for Charlotte in Friday’s 13-1 loss against Fordham.
n College softball
Maryland’s Devon Williams (West Rowan) tripled and scored in a 10-2 loss against UNC Saturday. Williams was 1-for-3 in a 2-1 loss against the Tar Heels Sunday.
n Catawba’s Ryann Baker (East Rowan) has a team-high seven homers. The senior catcher has 19 RBIs and is batting .320.
n Catawba lacrosse
Catawba’s lacrosse team held off St. Andrews 11-8 in Laurinburg Saturday. Braden Artem had four goals and two assists to lead the Indians (2-4). Marty Tuohy had three goals.
n College men’s golf
Virginia’s Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 71-73-75 รณ 219 in the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. Collins finished 26th. Virginia was 11th.
n College indoor track
Appalachian State senior Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) was named Southern Conference field athlete of the month for February. He also won the honor for January.
Sturgis won the triple jump at the ETSU Niswonger Invitational with a NCAA Provisional mark of 50 feet, 11 inches, a season best.
At ASU’s Valentine Open, Sturgis finished first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.49 and second in the 300-meter dash with a time of 35.99.
At the SoCon Indoor Championships, Sturgis captured the triple jump and was sixth in the long jump.
n College outdoor track
Many teams opened the outdoor track season at the 49er Classic in Charlotte on Saturday.
N.C. State’s Jason Jones (East Rowan) won the shot put (58 feet, 31/4 inches) and was fifth in the hammer throw (161-1). N.C. State’s Lamont Savage (West Rowan) was fourth in the long jump (23-1/2).
n Charlottte’s Makenzie Mullinax (South Rowan) was third in the women’s pole vault (10-8).
n Western Carolina’s Wayne Parker (East) was 12th in the pole vault (12-71/2).
n At the Wake Forest Open, Appalachian State’s Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) was seventh in the 100 (11.10) and eighth in the long jump (22-1/4).
ASU’s Phillip Bush (North) was ninth in the 110 hurdles (15.51) and sixth in the long jump (22-21/4).
n Catawba tennis
Catawba’s men’s tennis team topped Chowan 8-1 Saturday at Johnson Tennis Center.
Sean Soltan, Matt King, Tom McCormack and Uri Yarkoni won in singles and doubles for Catawba (9-4).
n Prep track
A.L. Brown’s Tavis Bailey won the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 3 inches at Saturday’s Marvin Ridge Invitational in Waxhaw.
Brown’s Larry Scaggs was third in the 3200 (10:11.6) and eighth in the 1500 (4:23.60).
n Brown’s girls had a strong showing in a field with many 4A teams. They placed sixth with 64 points and posted many regional qualifying marks.
In the 200, Wonders Tylivia Blackwelder (26.4), Keonna Eaton (27.1) and Estella Clark (27.3) took second, third and fourth, respectively.
Eaton was second in the 100 (12.4), while Blackwelder was third (12.7). Clark was fifth in the 400 (1:04.40).
Keonna Artis was fourth in the high jump (5-0). Adrian Morrison tied for 10th (4-8).
Krystal Johnson was fourth in the discus (98-11/2). Nia Boyd was sixth (87-10).
n South Rowan’s 4×800 boys relay team placed sixth and posted a regional qualifying time of 8:39. Sophomores Michael York and Caleb O’Neal and juniors Dalton Johnson and Nathaniel Winslow made up the unit. York also was 12th in the 3200 in 10:31.10. Johnson was 12th in the 1500 in 4:28.30.
South’s 4×800 girls relay team of Emily Kinney, Camille Craddock, Brenna Pruitt and Anne Mabry finished ninth. Kinney was 14th in the 3200 in 13:11. Houston was 14th in the 400 in 1:06.90.
n Mooresville junior Aisha Cannon won the long jump (16-61/2) and triple jump (35-3).
Mooresville’s Brandon Koerwitz won the 3200 (10:01.04).
n Northwest Cabarrus’ Garrett West was second in the 800 (2:00.20).
n Kannapolis Legion There will be one more parents’ meeting of any prospective players who plan on playing baseball for Kannapolis American Legion Post 115 on Thursday, March 26, at 8 p.m., at the Post 115 building on South Main.
n Rowan Alliance soccerThe U13 FCCA Rowan Alliance soccer team split two games over the weekend, bringing its record to 3-3.
John Canipe scored the lone goal in a 5-1 loss to Gaston United Blue.
In a 3-0 victory Sunday against the South Charlotte Soccer Association White team, goals were scored by Clint Comadoll, Carlos Zanudo and Zachary Sukkasem.
