Area briefs: Causby CCC Coach of the Year

Salisbury boys basketball coach Jason Causby was named CCC Coach of the Year. Causby guided the Hornets to a 28-2 record that included a 28-game winning streak and a perfect mark in the CCC.
Salisbury sophomore Darien Rankin was runner-up to Providence Grove’s Zeb Milliner for CCC Player of the Year honors.
SHS seniors Thaddeus Williams and Brandon Abel joined Rankin on the All-CCC team.
n Salisbury senior Shi-Heria Shipp was runner-up to East Davidson’s Anna Freeman for CCC Player of the Year honors.
Joining Shipp on the All-CCC team from Salisbury were senior De’Rya Wylie and junior Bubbles Phifer.
North Rowan senior Quon Cuthbertson represented the Cavaliers on the All-CCC team.
Salisbury’s Andrew Mitchell was runner-up for CCC Coach of the Year honors. Winning the award was East Davidson’s Terry Allmon. Salisbury won the 2A state championship, but East Davidson won the conference championship and tournament.
– College baseball
Belmont junior Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two RBIs in an 8-1 win to open Sunday’s twin bill against East Tennessee State and hit two homers and knocked in five runs in a 14-4 romp in the nightcap. The homers were his fourth and fifth of the season.
Wagner, a lefty-hitting second baseman, is batting .403 with 23 RBIs and is 7-for-7 on steals.
* Catawba hopes to play a doubleheader at Mars Hill today. The Indians (10-7) have battled rain often in recent weeks.
Junior third baseman Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) leads the Indians with a .446 batting average and has two homers and eight steals.
Senior catchers Kevin McMillan (North Rowan) and Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) have heated up for the Indians. McMillan is batting .327 with three homers and 15 RBIs. Query is batting .309 with three homers and 16 RBIs.
Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus) leads Catawba’s mound corps. He is 4-0 with a 3.73 ERA.
* Freshman pitcher Ryan Overcash (NW Cabarrus) has made five appearances for Davidson and is 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA.
Senior Brett Shore (South Rowan) is batting .322 with a team-high 10 steals in 14 games for Davidson.
– Recruiting seminar
A recruiting seminar open to boys and girls from all area schools will be held at South Rowan on Wednesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Natrone Means, a standout running back at Central Cabarrus, UNC and the NFL, will be the guest speaker and will discuss options for parents and athletes on what it takes to get recruited by a college program.
The seminar is free and will be held in the school auditorium.

– Rowan Junior Mustangs
The 12-under Rowan Junior Mustangs basketball team captured the Charlotte Bobcats Tip Off Classic Championship in the Gold Bracket Division over the weekend.
Team members include Connor Boothe, Corbin Hoffman, Conor Honeycutt, Jordan McKenzie, Joseph Peeler, Tyler Scruggs, Jason Troutman, Samuel Wyrick, Seth Wyrick and Austin Wyse.
– College women’s golf
Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot 81-81-72 for UNC Greensboro in the recent JMU Eagle Landing Invite in Orange Park, Fla. Smith tied for 52nd.
– McCombs golf tourney
