MONTREAL ó Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy’s NHL career record of 551 wins when the New Jersey goalie led the Devils to a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.
Brodeur was as steady as ever in making 22 saves back home in Montreal against Roy’s former team, with the Hockey Hall of Famer looking on from a suite. Brodeur has earned seven wins in eight starts after a 50-game absence caused by the first serious injury of his career.
He will get his first chance at setting the record Tuesday night at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.

WASHINGTON ó Thanks to Alex Ovechkin ó who else? ó the Washington Capitals finally rediscovered how to win at home.
Ovechkin moved within one goal of becoming the first Capitals player with 50 in three seasons and netted the winner in the shootout, helping his team end a four-game losing streak.
Erik Cole, Eric Staal and Ray Whitney each scored a goal and had at least one assist for Carolina, winless in its past three road games.

BUFFALO, N.Y. ó Brett Sterling scored the deciding goal in a shootout hours after he was called up from the minors, lifting the Atlanta Thrashers to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

TORONTO ó Mikhail Grabovski scored two goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs won, spoiling Flames newcomer Olli Jokinen’s five-point game.
