College basketball: McClinton comes through

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Jack McClinton scored just 11 points, but Miami held on to beat Virginia 62-55.
McClinton hit a huge 3-pointer with 47 seconds left Thursday to give the Hurricanes (17-10, 6-8 ACC) a two-possession cushion. They had lost six of their last seven games.
Virginia (9-15, 3-10) failed to score after Jeff Jones’ 3-pointer produced the eighth tie of the half at 55-all with 3:51 remaining. The Cavaliers committed turnovers on three consecutive possessions after pulling even.
Brian Asbury hit the shot that put Miami ahead to stay, and five players scored at least eight points on a night when McClinton took just 10 shots and converted three.
“There are times when I think our guys sit and watch Jack play, and we need to get away from that,” Miami coach Frank Haith said.
Jones led Virginia with 16 points, and Sylven Landesberg had 13.
No. 5 Memphis 71, UAB 60
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ó Doneal Mack and Antonio Anderson hit consecutive 3-pointers to help spark a decisive run that clinched Memphis’ fourth consecutive Conference USA regular-season title.
The Tigers (25-3, 13-0) won their 19th straight overall, the nation’s longest winning streak, and 55th in a row in the conference.
Memphis allowed only two field goals over the final four minutes while holding Robert Vaden scoreless on 0-for-17 shooting.
Michigan 87, No. 16 Purdue 78
ANN ARBOR, Mich. ó DeShawn Sims scored a career-high 29 points, and Manny Harris had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead Michigan.
The Wolverines (18-11, 8-8 Big Ten) improved to 3-4 against ranked opponents and added an important victory to the ones it had over Duke and UCLA, when both teams were ranked fourth in the nation. Michigan is trying for its first NCAA tournament bid in more than a decade.
Robbie Hummel scored 24 points for the Boilermakers (21-7, 10-5).
No. 17 Gonzaga 81, Santa Clara 73
SANTA CLARA, Calif. ó Josh Heytvelt scored a career-high 29 points and Matt Bouldin added 23, helping Gonzaga (22-5, 13-0) remain undefeated in the West Coast Conference.
No. 19 Xavier 68, Saint Joseph’s 54
PHILADELPHIA ó Derrick Brown had 18 points and 10 boards, and B.J Raymond scored 18 points to pace Atlantic 10-leading Xavier (23-5, 11-3).
No. 20 Illinois 52, Minnesota 41
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ó Mike Davis scored 14 points and Trent Meacham had 13 for Illinois (23-6, 11-5 Big Ten).
The Illini closed the game with a 14-2 run. Damian Johnson had 18 points for the Gophers (20-8, 8-8).

STANFORD, Calif. ó Josh Shipp hit four 3-pointers while scoring 24 points, and UCLA stayed in the race for its fourth consecutive Pac-10 Conference title.
Alfred Aboya hit four free throws in the final 14 seconds to finish with 16 points for the Bruins (21-7, 10-5). They hung on despite making just one field goal over the final 4 1/2 minutes.
Anthony Goods scored 18 points for Stanford (15-11, 4-11). It has lost eight of 10 to endanger its postseason hopes despite a perfect nonconference record.
No. 24 Butler 78, Youngstown St. 57
INDIANAPOLIS ó Matt Howard had 25 points and 10 rebounds as Butler (24-4, 14-3) clinched at least a share of its third straight Horizon League regular-season championship.
The win guaranteed the Bulldogs a bye into the conference tournament’s semifinals next week, either at home as the top seed or at Wisconsin-Green Bay as the No. 2 seed.
Appalachian St. 88, Chattanooga 82
BOONE ó Donald Sims hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the last minute and scored 35 points to lead Appalachian State (12-16, 9-10 Southern).
ASU held a 56-42 advantage with 16:50 to go before Chattanooga went on an 18-4 run to tie the game.
Kellen Brand scored 18 points for the Mountaineers, Donterious Hughes added 13 and Isaac Butts chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Western Carolina 65, Samford 58
CULLOWHEE ó Richie Gordon had 23 points and nine rebounds for Western (15-14, 10-9 Southern).
WCU started the second half with a 15-2 run to lead 48-39 with 14:28 left.
Brigham Waginger and Adrian Gailliard scored 10 points apiece.
Elon 75, Georgia Southern 61
ELON ó Drew Spradlin had 17 points for Elon (10-17, 7-11 Southern).

CHARLESTON, S.C. ó Andrew Goudelock scored 20 points to lead the College of Charleston.
Wofford got within three points after Corey Godzinski made a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, but the Cougars made free throws down the stretch.
Noah Dahlman paced Wofford with a career-high 36 points.
