The grounds of ancient Greece will shake with impending justice when the Catawba College’s Blue Masque presents “Electra.” The production runs from Feb 25- 28 in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus.
“Electra,” written by Sophocles and translated by acclaimed poet and scholar Anne Carson, tells the story of a young woman’s struggle with passion and rage as she seeks to restore honor to the tarnished house of her murdered father. In true tragic fashion, Electra must battle with questions of right versus wrong, reason versus action, and staying silent versus speaking up. Re-invigorated with original music and stylized modern dance, this production promises a unique look at a play with themes that remain relevant in contemporary society.
Dr. Janice Fuller, Catawba’s Writer-In-Residence and professor of English, serves as literary consultant for the production. She provided the cast with seminars and guidance on the literature and myths of ancient Greece.
Amber Hughes plays the title role. Other cast members include Nicole Bowles, Mary Alice Nichols, Aaron Ganas, Jesse Hunter, Jared Kenish, Gracie Greenbaum, Sara Johnson and Jesse Siak.
The production, directed by Betsy Foster, includes crew members Jordan Hunt, composer; Diana Hagler, stage manager; Vaughn Pullman, assistant stage manager; Katherine Tierney, set designer; Carrie Harris, costume designer; Eleanor Withrow, makeup and mask designer; Miranda Smith of Salisbury, lighting designer; Caitlin Becka, technician; and Dustin Sullivan, technician.
The production is offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, Feb. 28, in Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for all students and senior citizens. For more details, contact the Catawba College Theatre Box Office at 704-637-4481.
