From staff reportsFred Cooke, a former Boyden High star, will be playing in a Wake Forest alumni game today at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The Deacs face Florida State at 4 p.m. with the alumni game to follow.
Cooke played in two consecutive 4A high school basketball championship tournaments at the Greensboro Coliseum. In 1965, Boyden lost to a Fayetteville team featuring Rusty Clark and Van Williford.
In 1966, Boyden lost to Myers Park. He then played in the East-West All-Star Game.
Cooke played on the freshman team, coached by Neil Johnston and Billy Packer. Cooke said that team went undefeated in Big Four play, losing only to Davidson with Mike Maloy.
n Catawba on roadCatawba’s basketball teams will travel to Mars Hill this afternoon.
The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
n NPC tournament
South Rowan will play host to two games Monday in the first round of the NPC tournament.
Both South teams will play Mooresville in the No. 4 vs No. 5 games, with the girls game beginning at 6 p.m.
Mooresville’s boys are the higher seed, but the schools sensibly agreed to play the doubleheader at one site.
n Prep basketballDavie County’s boys fell to North Davidson 68-51 on Friday, despite 17 points from Shannon Dillard.
Davie will open the CPC tournament on Monday at R.J. Reynolds.
n Concord’s boys topped A.L. Brown 92-76 at Rimer Gym to finish a perfect SPC season.
Chance Rucker scored 23 points for the Spiders. Jacquise Moore had 20.
Demarcus Phifer led the Wonders with 16 points. Jacob Newman had 13 and T.J. Johnson 11.
n Concord’s girls tied for the SPC title by routing A.L. Brown 78-38.
n Jayvee basketball
The Salisbury jayvees ended on a high note Friday, tying for the CCC championship in boys and girls.
Both teams tied with East Davidson and Ledford.
The Hornet girls (15-2, 10-2) beat Providence Grove 70-23.
Doreen Richardson led the way with 21 points. Ayana Hicks had 18 and Najwa Allison 14. Every Hornet scored in the game.
– The Hornet boys (16-3, 12-2) beat Providence Grove 72-43. Deshan Taylor led Salisbury with 16 points. Dejoun Jones had 11. Tion McCain and Connor Miller each had 10.
n College baseball
Lander (6-1) plays Catawba at Newman Park this afternoon.
Lander freshman pitcher Billy Veal (North Rowan) is 2-0.
n College men’s hoops
Coker’s Michael Gore (South Rowan) scored eight points in a 91-67 loss against Mount Olive on Thursday. Gore and the Cobras play at high-scoring Pfeiffer today.
n College women’s hoops
RaShonda Mayfield (West Rowan) scored 13 points for Voorhees in an 85-19 romp against Fisk on Thursday.
n 7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls beat China Grove 33-21 on Thursday to stay unbeaten.
Erwin (5-0, 4-0) was led by Karleigh Wike with 16 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Lauren Thomas had nine points, seven steals and six rebounds.
Josie McNeely had six points and six steals. Kendall Brown had six steals.
China Grove (3-3, 2-2) was paced by Lynsey Corriher with seven points. Katie Cole scored six, and Madison Weast added five.
n China Grove’s boys nipped Erwin 28-25 for their first win.
The Red Devils were led by Eric Goldston (16 points) and Shawn Spry (15). Tyler Fuller added six points for the winners, who made four 3s.
Donte Means hit three 3-pointers and led Erwin (0-5, 0-4) with nine points. He also had seven steals and three assists. Calvin Edwards grabbed seven rebounds.
– North Rowan’s boys remained undefeated with a 44-26 win over Southeast. Michael Connor scored 20 points. Jaquan Boyd had nine, Cameron Sifford seven and Michael Bost six.
Southeast (2-2) was led by Trey Williams with 11 and Dashon Mason with six.
n Booster club switch
The South Rowan Boosters Club meeting that was scheduled for this Monday has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 23.
n Homeschool Stallions
The Rowan-Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions varsity boys basketball team lost 65-45 to First Assembly of Concord on Thursday. Christian Hicks and K.P. Hicks had 12 points apiece for the Stallions (12-11).
The varsity girls lost 46-44 to First Assembly and fell to 14-7. Hannah Holm had 24 points. Nikki Milo had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The jayvee boys lost 66-48. John Clay had 11 points for the Stallions (15-5).
n Hurley YMCA
The Jr. NBA/WNBA Skill Challenge will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
