Area Sports Briefs: Cornelius passes milestone

Meredith’s Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) surpassed the 1,000-point milestone when she scored 13 points against Peace Monday.
Cornelius, a 5-foot-9 junior, has 1,001 points and already ranks seventh in Meredith history.
* Saybah Sammy (Salisbury) had three points and nine rebounds for Fayetteville State in an 82-64 victory against Lincoln on Monday.
* S.C. State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points in an 82-45 loss against Florida A&M on Monday.
– Impact Baseball at West
An Impact Baseball Camp to identify prospects will be held at West Rowan Saturday morning. See Impact’s Web site for more information.
– Davie wrestling postponed
Dual team wrestling playoffs at Davie were postponed Tuesday due to winter weather.
– Salisbury hoops postponed
Salisbury’s girls game with Lexington was halted in the first quarter because of snow flurries. Games were tentatively rescheduled for tonight.
– Prep basketball
Piedmont shut down A.L. Brown’s leading scorer Demarcus Phifer, holding him to only five points on Tuesday.
But the Wonders proved they had other weapons in a 77-64 SPC victory. Six Wonders finished in double figures.
“Phifer just had an off shooting night,” Wonders coach Shelwyn Klutz said of his star guard. “But he had a good floor game.”
T.J. Johnson scored 14 points and Tevin Jones 13 to lead the Wonders (10-6, 8-4). Jacob Newman had 11 points, while Zach Massey, Xavier Watson and Vance Chapman contributed 10 apiece.
Klutz acknowledged Piedmont (2-11, 5-14) is a last-place team, but said, “They didn’t play like it tonight.”
Klutz was also happy with nine Wonders getting in the scoring column.
“It was good to see other people step up,” he said.
– Northwest Cabarrus slipped up on Tuesday night, falling to Mooresville 63-61 on a last-second shot.
Sophomore Tyler Honeycutt scored 14 points for the third-place Trojans (11-4, 15-5), while Juwan Reid had 10 and Stephen Kiser and Jeff Felton nine each.
– Jayvee basketball
Carson’s jayvee boys beat North Iredell 32-31. Dylan Eagle had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Cougars (5-11). Zach Wagner had five assists, and all the Cougars played tough defense.
* Brittney Barber’s 16 points led West Rowan’s girls to a 41-38 victory against West Iredell. Alison Dutton had six points, while Kim Jenkins scored five.
* Kajuan Phillips (20 points), Isaiah Cuthbertson (16) and Maurice Warren (12) paced West Rowan’s boys to a 56-49 victory against West Iredell.
– Salisbury 9th-grade hoops
Salisbury’s freshmen boys defeated Lexington 66-25 on Tuesday. The Hornets used a stifling defense to remain undefeated.
Deqwan Robertson led the Hornets with 19 points. Hanson Sayee and John Hall scored 11, and Kavarie Hillie had 10. Demarcus Tracey and Justin Ferguson ruled the boards.
– Catawba basketball
Catawba is scheduled to play host to Wingate in a SAC doubleheader tonight.
Catawba (12-7, 4-4) takes on Wingate (12-8, 3-6) at 6 p.m. in the women’s game.
The men’s game between the 25th-ranked Indians (13-5, 5-2) and the Bulldogs (8-12, 4-5) will follow.n Livingstone basketball
Livingstone’s men’s team lost 77-65 at Elizabeth City State on Tuesday.
Sean Booker led the Blue Bears (8-11, 4-10 CIAA) with 19 points. Santonio Springs had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Elizabeth City superstar Anthony Hilliard had his 51st career double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Hilliard became the first Viking in 41 years to reach 1,000 career rebounds. Trent Bivens scored 22 points for the Vikings (16-5, 9-4).
* Livingstone’s women lost to Elizabeth City State 70-65.
Brittany Wright scored 17 points for the Blue Bears (6-14, 5-8).
Kearah Jeffreys had 17 points for the Vikings (3-17, 1-12), and Joyce Freeman added 16 points.
– North Hills basketball
North Hills Christian’s middle school basketball team defeated Covenant Classical 42-29. Leading scorers were Matt Ward with 14 points and Luke Humble with 10.
– Stallions basketball
The Cabarrus-Rowan Stallions varsity boys improved to 12-9 with a 76-52 victory over Davidson County Home Education Tuesday night. Coach Matt Randolph’s Stallions have now won 4 in a row.
Christian Hicks scored a season-high 33 points, and his brother K.P. Hicks had 18 points and 18 rebounds. Caleb Dietz scored nine points, and Tim Coleman had eight.
– DCDS hoops
Harrison Baucom’s 3-pointer lifted Davidson Country Day to a 54-51 overtime win against Concord’s First Assembly.
Kenrick Jobe had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Diamondbacks (14-11). Celexus Long had nine points, Devin Perry had six rebounds, and Baucom had four steals.
* Jo Jo Chavis, Carleigh Ward and sisters Josie and Sydney Parker played well for DCDS in a 39-35 loss against First Assembly.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 40 points in two games last week in Italy. Sifford had 26 points and 21 rebounds in one contest.
– College baseball
Pfeiffer defeated Mars Hill 7-3 on Tuesday.
* Zach Glass (Salisbury) had an RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne in a 10-8 victory against Wingate on Tuesday.
– College indoor track
Charlotte shot putter Jake Deaton (Mooresville) was named A-10 Freshman of the Week. Deaton’s effort of 51 feet, 2 inches in the Carolina Classic was the longest in the A-10 so far this season.
– GARS outing
Sixty-Seven GARS members played with a Captain’s Choice format at Corbin Hills on Monday. Jim Bain, Don Bishop, Clarence Derrick and Carroll Downey shot minus-12 for first place.
Clive Mahaffey, Winsten Mahaffey, Don Martin and Guy Schenk finished at minus-9 and tied Larry Morris, Rudie Mounts, Gene Poplin and Vern Trexler for second place.
Bishop and Larry Luther took closest-to-pin honors, while Scott Miller had the longest putt on No. 9.
– Cannon student honored
Cannon School senior Ryan “Taylor” Williams of Kannapolis was named one of North Carolina’s top scholar-athletes by the 2008 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award program. Taylor is a member of Cannon’s swim team and was named MVP last season.
