Area briefs: Catawba women win

Senior Cameron Clark scored a career-high 22 points and added six rebounds and seven assists to lead Catawba’s women’s basketball team to a 94-71 SAC romp at Brevard on Wednesday.
Brooke Whitley and Kisha Long scored 15 points each for the Indians.
Catawba (10-5, 2-2) had a pair of 12-0 runs in the first half and shot 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
The Indians forced 26 turnovers and held a 32-26 edge on the boards.
Catawba led by as many as 28 points in the second half.
Samantha Winn scored 24 points for the Tornados (4-10, 0-5).

* Brittany Mitch scored 15 points to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 71-65 victory against Mars Hill.
Brittini Young scored 18 points for the Lions.
* Mandy Mendenhall scored 28 points to lead Carson-Newman to a wild 95-93 win at Wingate.
* Monica Alexander had 13 points and 16 rebounds for Newberry in a 55-45 victory against Lincoln Memorial.

– Pfeiffer men prevail
Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team outscored Mount Olive 96-95 at Merner Gym on Wednesday and handed the Trojans their first Conference Carolinas setback.
A free throw by freshman Danny Cummins with six seconds left provided the winning point.
Pfeiffer (6-6, 3-2) made only five 3-pointers, but it was 33-for-41 from the foul line and held a whopping 52-33 edge on the boards.
Robert McGriff scored 21 points for the Falcons, while Chris Donald had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Kendrick Easley tossed in 34 points for the Trojans (6-7, 5-1), who led by as many as 13 points in the first half.

– Pfeiffer women fall
Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team lost to visiting Mount Olive 84-73 in a Conference Carolinas game on Wednesday.
Shelley Reese scored 17 points for the Falcons. Jessica Walter and Shanee Purnell scored 15 each. Nicole Maready (Davie) had 13 points and six rebounds.
Jasmine Whitby had 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Trojans. Tomeka Richards scored 24 points.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 27 points for his team in Italy on Saturday.
* Damien Argrett (South Rowan) had five points and six rebounds for his team in Poland to open the second half of the season.
* Bryan McCullough (North Rowan) scored eight points for Dombovar as play resumed after the Christmas break in Hungary.
* Carlos Dixon (South) hit two 3-pointers and scored 17 for Quilmes Mar del Plata in Argentina as play resumed after the Christmas break.
– Homeschool Stallions
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions varsity girls basketball team (8-4) defeated Davidson Homeschoolers 47-21.
Hannah Holm led the way with 18 points. Ruth Ann Thomas added 10.
* Holm scored 20 points as the Stallion girls topped Covenant Classical 47-43.
* The Stallion varsity boys lost 86-83 in overtime to Davidson. Christian Hicks and K.P. Hicks each scored 20 for the Stallions, while Tim Coleman added 18.
* The jayvee boys beat Davidson 78-53. James Bare led the way with 16 points. Josh Long scored 15. Sam Nelson had 15 points and 16 rebounds.
* The jayvees also topped Covenant Classical 41-26. Bare scored 12, while John Clay had 10.
* The Stallion middle school boys beat Countryside Monastery 37-26 behind Jordan Long’s 13 points. Coby Hanson scored eight.
* The Stallions also beat Davidson 50-48 in overtime. Long scored 21 and Grant Stroller 14.
– Jaguar hoops
Madeline Hoskins scored 14 points for Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls (9-6, 2-2) in a 32-20 loss against Statesville Christian.
* The SA varsity boys rolled over Statesville Christian 54-7 to boost their record to 14-1 and 4-0 in the league.
n Ann Fisher Lindsay and Laura Weber helped SA’s jayvee girls (3-7) beat Statesville Christian 17-12.
* Sam McNeely and Robbie Slate paced SA’s jayvee boys (4-6) in a 29-21 victory against Statesville Christian.
– DCDS hoops
Davidson Country Day’s Diamondbacks lost to High Point Immaculate Heart’s middle school boys 39-33.
Coleman Hayes and Tim Burges scored 10 points each for the Diamondbacks, and Kenrick Jobe had eight points and 12 rebounds.
* The Diamondbacks dropped the jayvee girls game 28-17 to Immaculate Heart.
– Basketball tryouts
The Salisbury-Rowan Basketball Association is holding tryouts and open gyms at Hall Gym on West Bank Street.
Tryouts for 12-under boys are this Saturday from 2-4 p.m.
Tryouts for 11-under boys are this Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
The 14s team will hold open gym from 4-6 p.m. this Saturday.
